Our practice is designed around giving people the option to choose what is the best fit for them. Some people want brief counseling services in order to overcome a difficult situation or crisis through powerful counseling/therapeutic interventions, while others prefer a more gentle long-term approach. One of the goals of long-term therapy is to get to the root of our problems in order to experience positive changes in our selves that can last for the rest of our lives!

---Our Brief and Long-Term Counseling and Psychology Center offers premium-level psychological testing, counseling, psychotherapy, and coaching services for people in CT and RI. We evaluate, test for, and treat the majority of behavioral and mental health issues, such as:

Anxiety, depression, drug abuse, non-substance addictions (including but not limited to porn addictions, sex addictions, etc.), bi-polar (I and II), Attention Deficit [Hyperactivity] Disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, developmental disorders (including Asperger’s, pervasive developmental disorder, phobic disorder (we do behavioral treatment of the majority of these, such as a fear of heights, elevators, insects, spiders, etc.), obsessive compulsive disorder (includes compulsions such as cheek & lip biting, counting behaviors, nail biting, gambling, excessive cleaning/washing, etc.), personality disorders (such as borderline personality, paranoid personality, etc.), grief/loss/bereavement, eating disorders (such as anorexia nervosa & bulimia), conduct disorder, and some of the more rare disorders. We work with populations of all races/ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations (gay, lesbian, & bi-sexual), ages (infants through the elderly), groups, families, children, & couples. For those who do not speak English, we welcome a language interpreter, and have agreements with insurers to provide this type of service, though note that to use insurance through us, we do it primarily out-of-network, so please be sure to check what your out-of-network benefits are before calling.

Psychological testing includes: Intelligence testing (IQ), educational testing, learning disabilities, gifted children and adults testing, and personality testing. Dr. Colsen, director of psychology, uses the MMPI-2, MMPIA, WIAT, Rorschach, WISC-IV, Conners scales, Beck Inventories).

Models used or drawn from in conducting eclectic or integrated counseling / psychotherapy include: Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, Psychodynamic therapy such as Object Relations, Control Mastery Theory, Self-Psychology, Family Systems Theory, Inner Child Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Coaching, Supportive Counseling, Strategic Family Therapy (Jay Haley and Cloe Madanes), Problem Solving Therapy (Jay Haley), Narrative Therapy, and expressive non-verbal therapies (such as Rehearsals for Growth, Drama Therapy, and Art Therapy). We also do, when appropriate, extended genogram work (7-10 hours worth) on poster sized paper.
