Case 5 Valentine's Day Vacation Vandals WIP

I opened my eyes to find my dog Lovely standing on my pillow his head to one side a thoughtful expression on his little face. I smiled up at him and scratched his chin.

“Good Morning little buddy!” I said, “You know it is my off day and I don’t have to get up right?” He rolled over on his back all four feet in the air waving frantically. I laughed and scratched his exposed tummy.

“All right you win. Go get ready I will meet you by the front door.” He jumped to his feet spun around in a circle and then bounded happily away. After dressing, I found him by the front door holding his leash in his mouth. I grabbed my parka off the hook by the door, slipped him into his sweater then I clipped the leash to his collar.

“Ready?” I asked as I opened the door. The chilly February air rushed in astounding me.

“Are you sure you want to go out in this?” I asked Lovely answered by pulling me out the door. I closed it behind us and we wondered off down the street. David Cat was sweeping his front porch as we passed and I waved. Then on down the street we strolled. We were half way down when an overly bundled individual waddled toward us dragging a large amount of luggage behind them Lovely started barking and yanked at his tether the leash slipped from my grasp and lovely bolted forward circling the individual barking madly. I hurried forward and tried to stop him. As I approached, I instantly recognized who this stranger was.

“Violet” I cried in alarm. “What are you doing here?” I took some of her luggage and she sighed with relief. I lead her back toward my house I could see David’s Golden eyes fallowing us all the way to my front door. I helped Violet inside and she exploded stuff all over my foyer floor. When she was unwrapped, I showed her to my kitchen and started a pot of tea. I could clearly see she was still exhausted from her track from the train station to my house. Therefore, I got some bread and made some sandwiches in silence. Just when I thought she was ready to speak the doorbell rang now what I thought as I headed for the door. For a fleeting moment, my mind drifted to Will but when I opened the door, I found Henrietta Hippo standing on my front porch grinning from ear to ear. She handed me an envelope and hurried away without saying a word. I looked after her fro a moment until a gust of wind blew through me and I closed the door. I took the envelope back to the kitchen where I found Violet sitting at the kitchen table she had served the Tea and finished the sandwiches. When I sat down, she must have seen an odd look on my face because she said concerned.

“Who was at the door Honey?” I shook my head and handed her the red envelope. She took it and sliced it open with her unused butter knife. She read it silently for a moment before reading it aloud.

"For your exceptional service to the town of Pumpkin Ville we here by grant Katherine Anne Pig a three day all expenses paid Valentines Day vacation. Reservations for two have been made at the Lighthouse Inn; Please see the enclosed Ferry tickets!" When she had finished, she set down the letter and said. “Well at least I have not unpacked yet.” I blinked at her all of this was just happening to fast. She was just smiling at me. She took a bite of her sandwich watching me over the edge. When she finished chewing, she said. “Well, are you going to go pack?” I mindlessly stood up and went to my room. Without thinking, I packed for a three-day weekend on Lighthouse Island. Then I packed a travel bag for Lovely. When I was done, the three of us went outside to my surprise a large limo was parked in front of my house. Mr. Bunny got out of the drivers side he opened the trunk and loaded our luggage inside. Then he opened the back door and we got in the spacious car. The ride was short but pleasant and I could tell that Violet and Lovely were having the time of their lives. I was still in shock all of this was just to convenient. Mr. Bunny helped us load our luggage onto the ferry. When we embarked, Violet took my elbow and we went to the bow of the boat. We watched as the lighthouse came into view and I found that I was starting to get excited in spite my self. I smiled at Violet and wondered how she just happened to be here in Pumpkin Ville When the boat docked Sir Oliver Frog the bellman of the Lighthouse Inn hurried onto the boat and collected our luggage. He led us to the lobby of the hotel where Ally Alligator greeted us warmly.

“Hello Ladies welcome to the Lighthouse Inn. Activities for this weekend include a scavenger hunt, Valentines ball with dinner and a Moonlight boat ride.” Violet Locked eyes with me she shrugged and I smiled at her. This weekend is sure going to be interesting. I signed us in and Oliver carried our bags to our room. There was an awkward moment when frog opened the door and there was only a king sized bed in the room. Seeing our looks, he hurried in and opened a small door to reveal a little adjoining sitting room complete with a dresser and small pullout couch.

“We have a lot of families that come here with their children.” He explained, “We added this room recently to accommodate them.” He set the bags down and added “If you need anything please don’t hesitate to ring down. Then he left closing the door softly behind him. I offered the big bed to Violet but she shook her head and carried her bags to the smaller room. Lovely jumped up on the end of her bed turned around three times then settled down. I put my cloths away and sat on the hope chest at the foot of the bed. For a moment, I just sat there thinking about Will and how romantic it would have been if he were here. Violet came into the room and wrapped me in a big hug.

“Don’t you worry Dear he will come home to us. “ she said and kissed my forehead. I smiled up at her and wiped a wayward tear from my cheek. Standing I said

“Let’s have a look around before we turn in for the night we have a big day of romantic activities tomorrow.” I extended my elbow to her. She laughed linked arms with me and we went downstairs to the main hall. Sir Oliver Frog stood at attention before a small crowd.

" Looks like we have a full house this weekend.” He said as we approached. “I was just going to start the tour care to join us?” I looked at Violet who nodded Sir Frog turned to the crowed and clapped until every one was looking at him. “I am Sir Oliver Frog curator and bellman for this Inn for the last fifteen years. If there is no one else coming I will begin our tour.” The crowd gathered around Frog and he cleared his throat. He made eye contact with me and gave me a wink I smiled back. With an air of dignity frog began leading our little group outside and down the small path to the Lighthouse. When we arrived, he took out a large ring of keys and opened the wooden door. He stepped aside and we all filled into lower chamber. Frog entered behind us and closed the door. “This light house was built before the town itself. The legend tells of a wayward ship that crashed on the rocks below. The stranded crew used stones from the rocky beach and the planks from the ship to build this lighthouse. When no rescue arrived, they moved inland and built the mansion, you know as Light House Inn. One by one, we fallowed frog slowly up the winding staircases to the watch room. From there, we went out the glass door to the gallery where we fallowed the rotating light around then descended the stairs again. As we traveled downward I noticed how polished the stones were, the sailors must have labored many hours in hopes of a rescue that never came. I wondered if any ghosts haunted the stairs that moaned in protest as we traveled down. When we were all outside again Frog locked the door, he gave it a loving pat then gazed up at the massive structure with reverence before leading us back to the inn. When we entered, Ally came out of the kitchen covered in flour from head to toe.

“Greetings folks supper is almost ready why don’t you all go upstairs to your room and freshen up. I will ring you when it is time.” Like little children, we all obediently trudged up the stairs to our rooms. I went into the bathroom and washed the saltwater from my face. Then I got Lovely’s Leash and told Violet that we would meat her in the dinning room later. Lovely and I went out the back door into the lavish garden. I breathed deeply. The salty air mixing with the fruity smell of the flowers filled my lugs and made me feel more alive then I had in a long time. Maybe this was a good idea after all. No, work no mysteries to solve just rest relaxation and the company of good friends. In the center of the garden labyrinth was a small fountain in the shape of a dolphin. She stood there on her stone tail smiling at me. Above her head, she held a stone parasol beautifully carved with the creatures of the sea. The water bubbled forth from the top of the parasol and rained down into a small pool, filled with lily pads Lotus and Oranda. The entire thing was so breath taking that I stood there transfixed Lovely at my feet his head cocked to one side. We were so mesmerized, that when a deep voice said.

“Beautiful, is she not?” Lovely growled and I spun around grasping my chest.

“Oh my goodness you scared me!” I said trying to catch my breath. There before me was a massive eagle. He was so imposing that he blocked my entire view of the exit passage. I tried not to show my growing fear instead I smiled warmly and extended my arm. He removed a tiny top hat from his baldhead and bowed low.

“Excuse me for startling you Miss!” he said I was sent to retrieve you for dinner by Mrs. Van piggy.” He extended his wing I reluctantly took it and we traveled back down the isle. I had to walk slightly behind him because we both did not fit side by side between the bushes. He navigated the labyrinth as if he knew it by heart. When we entered the Inn, he led me to the dinning room where all of the guests had assembled for dinner. As we traveled around the room, he introduced me to them as if we were all his old pals. First, there was Mr. and Mrs. Bovine celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Next were Mr. and Mrs. Coney and their six children on vacation. As we passed one of the bunnies stuck his tong out at us I resisted the urge to return the gesture. Ally Alligator sat at the head of the table Mrs. Von Piggy to her right. The Eagle pulled out the chair next to her and I sat down. Then he got a small highchair and helped Lovely into it. He scooted him up to the table and took the chair next to him. He leaned back and introduced Mr. and Mrs. Tortoise who was newly weds. Sir Frog who placed the last dish on the table and took his place at the foot made little group complete. We all pitched in dishing the food and passing it around the table until everyone was served. I ate silently watching the other guests interact. Mr. and Mrs. Coney looked tired as they handled their young trying without success to keep them orderly. The one with the tough that did not want to stay in his mouth decided that he did not like peas. He instead found them to be better projectile weapons. I watched in horror as his long ears quivered and then point in my direction as he honed in on his next target. He placed a pea on his spoon bent it backwards and released it. I watched its slow trek across the table toward me knowing that I was defenseless against its wrath. Just then Lovely was in my lap his mouth open wide. He snatched the pea out the air just minuets before it hit me n the forehead. This act sent the small trouble maker into hysterics he placed a whole paw full of peas on the spoon I started to stand but his mother finally finished cutting his little sister’s carrot and caught him in the act. She scolded him and took away the spoon. I could tell by the way he was smiling at me this war had only just begun. I felt something rubbing on my legs and look down to find a fluffy dog presenting its hindquarters to me for a scratch. I could not help but bend down and pet her. Lovely was instantly jealous until the dog turned and fluttered her long white eyelashes at him. He slid down my lap as if it was suddenly made of ice. He fell at the girl’s feet presenting his belly to her his skinny legs sticking strait up in the air. I had never seen him act so foolish before. I started to laugh and the whole table turned to look at me. Ally rose and came around the table to see what the commotion was all about.

“Ah, Patty you have done it again!” This is my poodle Patty she has a way with men” she explained Patty ignored Lovely and went to a nearby bed where she turned around three times and lay down. Lovely crawled on his belly to her and lay at her feet looking up at her with smitten eyes.

The rest of the meal continued without incident. After dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Coney excused themselves and herded their sleepy children off to bed the rest of us filed into the drawing room where Sir Oliver Frog brought us tea and scones. I wondered around the room looking at the great portraits of the Pirates who had lived here waiting to be rescued. I wondered what it would have been like to be a pirate back then. Pirates are almost like detective in a way they fallow the clues to find hidden treasures. I heard someone clear his or her throat behind me and I turned to find Violet standing there. Her face was drawn and she looked much older then I remembered her to be.

“I think I shall retire now.” She said I took her hand mine and said.

“Do you wish for me to accompany you?” She shook her head and gave me a peck on the cheek. “No Dear you stay here and do what you do best.” She said and then turned on her heal and headed upstairs before I could ask her what she meant. I looked around the room and spotted Ally by the window gazing out at the ocean. I went over and stood silently beside her. She turned her long nose toward me and I saw a single tear trickle down her face before she produced a hanky from her apron and wiped it away. She spoke with a quiver as she said. “Nice night don’t you think?” I look at her wanting to know what had saddened her but I could tell from the expression on her face that she was not ready to speak of it just yet so I said.

“Yes I love the way the stars seem brighter here.” She nodded and said

“The sailors who crashed on this island were Pirates, they knew that no one would be looking for them but they built the light house anyway the captain was getting on in years and wanted to settle down. Some say he crashed on this island on purpose. The even think he buried his treasure somewhere on this island.” She paused there and look out at the water. I turned to look to but only saw my reflection I felt as if I was being watched so I turned to Ally again, studding her profile the fur on her long slender nose glistened with a fresh set of tears so I took a step closer to her and put my arm around her shoulder. She leaned her head on my chest her long ears tickling my chin. After a moment, she stood strait again. Softly she said.

“I married a sailor. His crew was forced to land here by a storm a few years back. During their stay, the captain and I got along well spending nearly every minuet together. One night we went for a walk and he told me my main flowed like the waves of the sea. He then to my surprise got down on one knee and begged me to be his sea on the land. Despite the fact I am a horse and he is an alligator I could not help but say yes. My friends always tease me that I picked him only because I have a thing for the color green, but there is more to him than just that he understands the sea and knows how to weather her storms. He brings the same kind of knowledge to our relationship.” She paused for a moment looking at her reflection in the window. I sensed that there was more so I stood silently waiting she took a deep breath and said. “The bank came to see me last week they said that my mortgage was over due and I had until the end of the month to come up with the short fall. My husband is out on a fishing trolley and is not expected to return for two months. I am afraid he will not have a place to come home to.” Over come by grief, again she pulled a tissue of her apron and dabbed at her eyes. When she could speak, she said. “I have set up this little valentines weekend as a last ditch attempt to get some business. I have even pawned some of the old antiques in this house but Moxie barely gave me enough for one payment.” At the mention of Moxie, I gritted my teeth and vowed to get the stuff back as soon as I could. I turned to her and said, “I wish there was something I could do.” She smiled at me and said. “You have done enough just being here. Though I have to say, if you famous detective skills just happen to kick in and you find the lost treasure I would be forever grateful.” Then she excused herself and hurried out of the room.

So much for not working, I thought as I watched her disappear. I saw Sir Frog over by the fire he carefully stirred the coals until the fire was a blaze again but no smoke or ash filled the room. I walked over and stood silently while he arranged a log on the new flame. He stood wiped his flippers on a towel and said as if he could read my thoughts. “Yes it is a shame what is happening to this old place and I would be happy to take you to the main land to do some shopping tomorrow.” I smiled at him and bid him goodnight. I whistled for Lovely who reluctantly went out to take care of business then we both went up to bed.

(Start of day 2)

The next morning we woke up early, so Lovely and I went outside, where we saw Ally and Patty walking slowly down the path to the lighthouse. We hurried to catch up She smiled warmly at me while Lovely and Patty sniffed each other then we fell into step walking on in silence the dogs trotting between us. When we reached the shore Ally stopped her ears flicked back and forth first, the right, and then the left. Then they both lay down flat toward her tail. I stood silently waiting finally she spoke. “My Great grandfather was one of the sailors who crashed here he is berried along with the other crew in the garden labyrinth. I was born here and wanted to die here now the bank wants to take it all away from me.” I looked at her my eyes open wide and asked,

“The sailors are barred on the island?” she laughed and said

“Of coarse a captain never leaves his treasure and a crew never leaves their captain. To tell you the truth I think the captain forgot where he buried it.” Oh great I thought sarcastically that will make it easier to find. I look up and saw Sir frog heading toward the dock to get the boat set for our journey to the mainland. I excused my self as I walked away she reminded me that I needed to be back after lunch for the scavenger hunt. I promised that I would then Lovely and I hurried after Sir Frog we helped him fuel the little boat then I united the mooring line and jumped in. We cast off and slowly putted our way to the mainland, I cleared my throat and spoke over the roaring of he motor.

“Did you take Ally to the mainland when she wanted to sell the items for the house?” Sir Oliver Frog lowered one eye and looked at me sideways. I hurriedly explained that I was going to Moxy’s shop and wanted to make sure that I did not miss anything. He nodded and pulled a note from his vest pocket I scanned it and found it contained a detailed list. I smiled up at him and he winked at me, I marveled at his uncanny way of knowing exactly what was needed. I was about to ask him if he knew where the treasure was but he raised a flipper and said.

“No lass I have no idea. That captain hid it so well he couldn’t ever find it again, but I have a feeling you will find it.” I was honored by his confidence in me but I did not feel it myself. I said.

“Well we will see what I can get from Moxie.” He laughed and said.

“Don’t let old Moxie get you down he may be a sneaky coon but he is easily swayed by a kind word and a little green.”

“He is also afraid of my vicious attack dog.” I said gesturing to Lovely who was curled into a tight ball at my feet snoring loudly. Sir Frog started to laugh and that sweet sound carried us the rest of the way to the mainland. He promised to be back at the docks to take me to the island for the scavenger hunt. Lovely and I strolled down Main Street toward Moxy’s shop. He was just coming out of Tally’s Deli a jelly doughnut half way to his mouth. When he saw us, his eyes went wide and he looked for a quick escape. When none was found, he put on a smile and sauntered across the street.

“Well if it isn’t my two favorite customers. What brings you down this way? I thought you were on Holiday.” I gave him my best tooth grin and said.

“Well it gust so happens I forgot my note book and since I was here anyway I thought I would do some shopping. He gave me an Oh-really-look before unlocking the door to his shop. He stepped across the threshold and said.

“Come in then and have a look around.” I walked directly to the counter, placed the list down and I said,

“I would like to buy these articles please.” He hurried behind the counter and took a monocle out of a pocket on his vest. When he saw the items, he staggered backwards clutching his chest.

“You are kidding right?” he said. I bit my tongue to keep from lashing out at him. Instead, I took out my wallet. Lovely jumped up on the counter and put a paw on the list. Moxie backed away with his paws out in front of him. Slowly he went around the store gathering up the items and placing them gently on the counter taking special care not to get to close to the counter where Lovely sat glaring at him. When he had assembled all of the items I put on my best smile and said.

“So how is Faberge business going?” he stated at my question then I saw him smile proudly for a split second before his usual frown returned to his face.

“It is getting along well enough.” He said then turned to the cash register. As I was watching, the large numbers appear on the screen I had and idea I blinked my eye lashes at him and said. “I was just cautious because I was thinking about commissioning one for Mrs. Violetta Van Piggy.” I could tell by his bug-eyed expression that he knew exactly who that was. I watched in amusement, as the numbers gradually got smaller. He even went as far as moving a few items to the done pile without ringing them up at all. He gave me the total; I paid and asked to have the items delivered to the island. I said that I would be in touch soon about the egg theme. As I walked out of the shop, I put on my rear reflective sunglasses. Moxie watched me walk away for a moment then he took and item off the counter and hurried into the back room. I whistled to Lovely who came running from somewhere I noticed he had something in his mouth so I hurriedly picked him up and we left the store. We crossed the street and went into Tally’s deli. I took the item from Lovely and put it quickly into my purse. I watched Moxie come out of the shop and hurry in our direction. When he entered the Deli, however he seemed lost and confused. The other customers stared making him even more nervous. He slithered his way to the counter Tally came over and asked us?

“What can I get for you DK?” He looked around me at Moxie and said, “Did you forget something?” Moxie stood there blinking at us for sometime. Then something snapped and said.

“I was looking for my doughnut. Did I leave it in here?” I tried to suppress a giggle as I said

“I saw you put it ion your pocket when you got out your keys.” Flustered he stared patting down his pockets and sure enough when he got to the right front pocket of his pants there was a loud squishing sound everyone in the restaurant looked away their faces scrunched. With out missing a beat I turned to Tally and said.

“That sounded good, I’ll take one of those.” Lovely barked in agreement. Tally bit his lip and said awkwardly

“Two Jelly doughnuts coming right up.” Moxie threw his paws in the air and stormed out of the shop the door banging noisily behind him. Lovely and I sat in our usual spot and watched Moxie though the window at first he seemed to be yelling at his pocket then he frantically scurried around his shop opening and closing cupboards. He finally hung his head in defeat and began to carefully put the items I have purchased into shipping crates. One by one, the items disappeared. I watched, as the last item was the one he had taken off the counter a long cylindrical leather tube that looked like a case for a spyglass. He took one last mournful look inside then placed it with the rest of the merchandise and sealed the containers. Dog and cat movers came, loaded all of the items onto their truck, and drove toward the docks. I was pleased to think the items were being returned to their rightful owner. We finished our food and then Lovely and I went to our house where I watered the plants and checked my messages. As I sat at my desk, I remembered the object I had retrieved from Lovely. I was about to get it from my purse when Lovely come in he looked at me then at the clock on the wall. I smiled and said

“OK we will go I know you don’t want to miss the scavenger hunt.” We hurried to the dock where Frog was waiting patiently. We boarded and cast off as we putted slowly back to the island I noticed that Oliver was smiling at me. When I could not stand it, anymore I asked,

“Why are you smiling at me like that?” He winked and said,

“For centuries treasure hunters have searched for the lost treasure of the marooned pirates, but no one has even come close.” I interrupted and asked,

“This makes you smile?” His grin broadened and he shook his head.

“The thing that makes me smile is I believe you are the first one who can.” I could feel my face turn red I looked away until felt my face cool once more. When I looked back, Frog was no longer smiling he was instead looking mournfully out to the sea. What he said next shocked me so badly that you could have picked my jaw up off the deck.

“My great Grandfather was first mate on the ship that crashed on those rocks there,” He said gesturing to the cliffs on our right

“When I was a lad, he told me all about how they built the light house by mining the very rocks that had ripped their precious ship apart. My grandfather begged the captain to fix the ship but the captain was tired of running he wanted to stop being hunted. He just built the lighthouse as a gesture to his men as soon as he could he made them build the house. When he was all settled in the captain went about hiding his precious treasure. He hid it so well that in his old age he did not remember where. My Grandfather sat by him on his death bed and begged him to tell instead he gave my grandfather this.” He handed me a pipe before continuing.

“The captain told my grandfather that this was the first of the eight clues that would lead the follower to the treasure. For the rest of his life my grandfather searched, but she could not find it. He passed this down to me and I took up his quest.” I tried to hand the pipe back but he held up his flipper. “I want you to have it. I am to old to hunt for treasure and I believe that you have the heart it will take to finely solve this.” I felt my face redden again. I put the pipe in my purse. We docked so Lovely and I disembarked I turned to him and was about to say thank you but in is usual way he raised his flipper and said before I could even open my mouth. “Don’t you worry yourself lass I know you will put it to a good use this place is my home if you find that treasure it will be saved.” I thanked him anyway, and then Lovely and I hurried for the lobby where everyone was gathering in the foyer for the scavenger hunt. Ally caught my eye and beckoned me over. There was a look of gratitude on her face. She opened her mouth to speak but closed it again unable to find the right words. I winked at her and she hugged me. Her soft mussel tickling my ear when she whispered

“You are now my honorary sister forever.” I kissed her cheek and said,

“You are most welcome. I am always happy to help.” She wiped away a tear and turned to the listless crowd.

“Hello guests if you will please select a card from this basket on it you will find a clue that will lead you to your fist scavenger hunt location when you get there you will find a pedestal with another clue attached fallow that clue to the next. There are eight clues to find.” I gave Ally a quizzical look and she winked at me. From around her neck she took a brass whistle attached to a chain, she slipped it over my neck, I smiled up at her, and she smiled back. Then she wondered amongst the guests with a basket of cards stopping so that every couple could pick one. I went over to where Violet stood and peeked over her shoulder at our card it read. Roses are Red Violets are Blue I sleep in a bed just like you. I heard whispers travel thought the crowd as the other guests tried to figure out their clues Ally cleared her throat and the crowed instantly went silent.

“Are there any questions?” She asked. Mr. Agile raised his wing. Ally looked at him suspiciously.

“I was just wondering if this contest is really fair.” Ally turned her head to the side one half of her lush lips curled up to reveal her white teeth. She shook her mane, stomped her food, and said.

“Whatever do you mean sir?”

“Well Ma’am I mean no disrespect but she is a detective.” He said pointing his long pinfeather at me. Ally though her head back and laughed.

“Sir the clues are simple enough that even a child could solve them.” I tried to look away but he caught my eye. I knew that He was not upset about a simple scavenger hunt this had to do with the pirate treasure some how. To make matters worse, there was something about the Eagle that was pull at my subconscious but every time I reached for it slipped out of my grasp. So I filed it away hoping if I let it alone it would come back to me when I needed it. Ally snorted and the whole room looked at her.

“Please keep in mind animals, this is just for fun there are no winners or losers.” she said blinking her long eyelashes at the Eagle. Who bowed respectfully never taking his eyes off of me. Violet took my arm and we headed for the door. I whistled for Lovely but he did not come running like usual so I told Violet I would meet her outside and went in search of him I found him at Patty's feet.

"We are starting the scavenger hunt now." I told him. He just looked at me and blinked as if he did not understand me. "Are you going to join us?" I asked knowing his answerer. He looked from me to Penny and back again then let out a mournful sigh. "All right," I said. "Suit yourself." I found Violet sitting on a bench just outside the door staring at our card intently. We linked arms and headed toward the garden. Just as we were about to enter the maze, there was a commotion by the well. Violet and I hurried over; one of the young Coney children had fallen into the well. The poor child clung desperately to a vine that had grown down the inside of the stone. When she saw us, she cried out. Violet and I sprang into action. I searched the rope for the bucket but only found an empty hook.

"May be it's in the shed." Violet suggested. I hurried to the shed but only found Sir Frog sanding a boat hull.

"Quick there is a small child stuck in the well. Do you have the bucket?" Sir Frog set down his sander and hurried over.

"No the bucket should be on the well, but I did see that Rascal Coney going toward the beach with a bucket yesterday. Maybe he was using it to make a sand castle or something. I'll go and fetch it." he said and turned toward the beach.

"No you go get Ally. I will go get the bucket from the beach." I hurried to the beach as fast as I could go. When I rounded the bluff, I heard two small cries for help so I picked up the pace. There in the middle of the beach, Mr. and Mrs. Tortoise lay helplessly on their backs next to a large sand castle the well bucket displayed prominently on top. I rushed to their side and helped them to their feet once more. Then I scrambled up the side of the castle and retrieved the bucket.

"Come along!" I said, "There is no time to waste!" they looked at me curiously but when I hurried off they both tottered slowly after me. As we got closer to the house, we heard Mr. Bovine yell.

"Well I did not get it stuck on purpose. What do you mean flatten my ears? I am flattening my ears." There they were Mr. Bovine's head stuck in the chicken hutch fence his wife desperately trying to free him. "Don't tell me how to back up woman I have been backing up for fifty years." He swore at her.

"You may know how to back up but that doesn't mean you watch were your going." She replied. "If you had read the clue properly this never would have happened in the first place." He said.

"I.." she started to say but noticed us approaching. "Oh good pastures help has arrived" she exclaimed. I went into the pen assessed the situation pressed his ears against his head turned it slight to the left and gently pushed. He came tumbling out into the waiting arms of his wife. We all stood there shocked for a moment watching as they nuzzled noses and mooed lovingly to each other. The trance was broken by a cry from Violet. "Hurry Katherine!" I raced toward the well Tortoise and Bovine at my heals. When I got to the well, I watched in horror as Mr. Eagle flipped a coin into the murky depths. It made a ping sound as it bounced off the walls until it made a small thump. "Ouch" came echoing out of the opening! I hurried over pushed him out of the way attached the bucket to the hook and Frog slowly lowered it into the well. The stranded Coney climbed into it. Everyone but Mr. Eagle took turns hoisting it upwards. Soon the child was safely in her mother's arms that had arrived just as the ears had become viable over the edge. Defeated we made our way back to the inn were Ally had hot chocolate and snicker doodles waiting for us. Lovely came running when he heard me enter. He sniffed my wet sandy clothes.

"You missed an adventure,” I told him. He whined "Don't blame me your the one who wanted to stay here and swoon." I told him. He sat down and looked up at me with his big brown eyes, as if to say, "Well, go on tell me what I missed." I went over to the fireplace and cleared my throat "Can I have every ones attention please." I said then waited until everyone was looking at me before continuing. "Please could you all explain how you ended up in the predicament I found you in?" They all started chattering at me at once until Ally stood and stomped her foot and shouted.

"She meant one at a time." All the guests lined up each handing me their clue. I opened them one at a time reading them aloud. First up was the young Coney hers read,

"Look real close and you will see when you wish you look just like me." She looked at me and whispered.

"I was two short to look into the well so I climbed up on the edge it was so slippery I fell in." She hurried back behind her mother's skirt. Next was Mr. Tortoise he handed me his note as I opened it a shower of sand cascaded down to the floor. Looking embarrassed, he said, "After reading that we figured the next clue was in the bucket but when we climbed up the dune the sand was so soft it slid out from under our feet." I read their note it said.

"It is within your reach when life is a beach." Mrs. Bovine stepped forward and said

"I told Pa he was reading it wrong. He never wears his reading glasses because he says they make him look too old. Therefore, I tell him, your are old you silly fool. He does what he wants to though and look where it got him head stuck in a fence it did!" Mr. Bovine stepped forward and grabbed his wife's arm.

"Shut-up woman and let the young lady read the clue so she can figure out what is going on here." His wife gave him a dirty look but she smiled at me and handed over the clue. I read it to the others.

"On the other side it would seem the grass is green have a closer look to see just what I mean." Ally took a long drink of coco her long ears flicking back and forth before speaking.

"You have to believe me when I say that I did not write those clues. I would never have sent any of you into danger." Violet stepped forward and handed me our clue. I compared our paper to the others. Sure enough, the clue we had was written in neat block letters while the others were a messy scrawl. Therefore, who had made these and why? There was a terrible trickster about and I had better find them before someone was seriously hurt. Ally stood and said,

"I am truly sorry for this unfortunate accident. I think its best if we all retire for tonight, tomorrow is another day and the dawns light has a way of clearing the fog." The guests filed out of the room murmuring to each other quietly. When everyone was gone, I felt a small tug at my pants leg. I looked down to find the young Coney girl. I bent to her level and she whispered in my ear.

"While I was in the well some thing hit me in the head, then it fell into my pocket. Since you saved me I want you to have it." She slid a small object into my hand then bounded away before I could say any thing. The Eagle entered the room so I quickly dropped it into my pocket. He swaggered over to the fireplace, lit his cigar, and stared at me while I whistled for Lovely. Despite my gut telling me I should not turn my back on him I turned on my heal and we left the room under his watchful eye. On the way up, I heard a commotion in the kitchen. I hurried to investigate. I found Ally and Crow arguing.

"I bought the mayonnaise Ma'am it was right here this morning." Crow pleaded.

"How can a gallon of mayonnaise just get up and walk away?" Ally demanded. I stepped into the room and said.

"Is there any thing I can do to help?" Ally hung her head and shook it.

"No Katherine this is just a simple mix up." Knowing she could not be persuaded I bid them good night and headed upstairs to bed. I changed into my pajamas, turned out the light, and slid under the covers. Instead of the bed being warm and soft, it was cold and slimy. I screamed, jumped out of it, turned on the light, and threw back the covers. Just then, the door burst open and Ally and the rest of the guests piled into my room. I motioned toward my bed and said.

"I guess I was helpful after all I found your missing dressing." Ally clutched her chest and looked as if she was going to faint. Mr. Bovine led her to the nearest chair easing her into it. Mr. Eagle entered and said,

"Well now look at that. If you were to add a slice of cheese you would have a yummy ham sandwich." Ally sprang up and yelled.

"That is it everyone out. Crow get Katherine a fresh set of towels." She marched everyone out of the room and led me down the hall to the bathroom where she drew me a bath. When I was finished, I found my pajamas cleaned, pressed, and waiting. I dressed and slid into a clean bed. Determined to find out who was behind all of this first thing tomorrow. Lovely curled up beside me and soon we were fast asleep.

(End of day two) (Start of day three)

The next morning I awoke with a start, I had been dreaming that I was lost in the labyrinth and some one was chasing me. Lovely inched his way up my chest and licked my face. I scratched his chin and he sighed.” What is wrong little buddy?" I asked. He rolled over on his back and batted his eyelids at me. I laughed and said.

"I think you are going at this the wrong way. She is not looking for someone to grovel at her feet. I believe her heart would go pitter patter for a dashing hero who would lay down his life for her." Lovely barked and jumped off the bed he ran to the chair where I had set down my purse the previous evening. With great effort, he grabbed it by the strap and pulled it to the edge of the bed. I sat up, leaned down, and picked them both up placing them in my lap. When I finished unzipping it, Lovely scurried in he emerged again holding the object he had stopped Moxie from taking. I took it from him turning it over an over what an odd thing it was. It was in a shape of a half circle and made of gold. It had five strait rays extending from it four round ones on the outer edge and one flat ray in the middle. Where had I seen something like this before? Then I remembered the piece the small Coney had given me. I jumped out of be sending lovely and the continence of my purse flying to the floor. I hurried to my suitcase where I had place the item when I changed into my pajamas the night before. I dressed quickly, made the bed, picked up the discarded purse and dog then sat on the bed the collected items before me. First was the carved pipe from Sir Frog, then the whistle from Ally fallowed by the two pieces of gold. I picked up two gold pieces they seemed to be mirror images. I put the two halves together the center pole and the outer edges of the circle snapped into place. When assembled it looked like the wheel of a pirate ship. I tried to recall where I had seen it before; when realization hit me like lightning, I could hardly contain my excitement. I stood up then sat right back down again. Lovely looked at me as if I had lost my mind. I showed him the gold wheel and explained.

"This is a scarf clasp, the captain is wearing it in the portrait downstairs." Just then, Violet entered groggily from the adjoining room.

"What is all the excitement about?" She asked then added, "I could hear your heart racing in the next room." I laughed and showed her the three items.

"I just have to find five more to find the treasure." I said. She shook her head.

"Finding them is one thing but then you have to figure out how they all fit together." she said. I frowned and she patted me on the shoulder.

"Do not worry you will figure it out, but first we will have some breakfast then we will solve this one as a team." she ordered. I raised my eyebrows at her. She winked at me as she went to get ready, saying in her wake.” I am on vacation Honey and I plan on enjoying my self."

We went down stairs where everyone was seated around the large table eating quietly. Violet, Lovely and I joined them every one nodded acknowledgement but no one spoke other than to ask something to be passed. I guess they were all still soar about yesterday’s events. After breakfast, we went into the den for coffee each guest staying with his or her party. Violet and I went to the portrait of the captain. He was standing by the dolphin fountain looking at the lighthouse through a spyglass, smoking the carved pipe. At his side was a massive white dog with brindle spots. Violet and I exchanged glances and took a step closer while at the same time trying not to look conspicuous. Holding his red and blue scarf around his neck was the helm clasp. In his left hand was the whistle. I grabbed Violet's sleeve and escorted her from the room. We went back up to our room. We were so excited that we said in unison.

"Did you see the pieces of eight?" I grabbed my coat and dressed Lovely in a sweater. Violet was waiting for us by the door. I looked at her thoughtfully for a moment then said

"Are you sure you want to come it could get dangerous." She shook her head dismissively. I knew from Will that once she had set her mind to something there was no changing it. Therefore, after I opened the door I stood aside and let her pass through. When we reached the staircase its entrance was completely blocked by Mr. Eagle. We stared at each other silently for a while until Violet cleared her throat. Mr. Eagle tipped his tiny top hat toward us and stepped one step to the right we squeezed our selves between his wing and the banister. When we were clear we hurried the rest of the way down and out the front door. When we were safely outside Violet said,

"He gives me the creeps." I nodded in agreement and said,

"Where should we start?" She shrugged. I went over to the bench and took out the clues one at a time. First was the pipe on the side was a beautiful carving of a ship heading toward the lighthouse. Standing on the shore was a dog. Next, was the scarf clasp in the shape of a ships wheel and finally was the brass whistle. I could not figure out how all of these items fit together and I certainly did not know where I was going to find the other five items. I picked up the whistle and gave it a toot; from somewhere in the distance I heard a bark. Lovely barked back but there was no reply. Violet gestured for me blow it again so I did this time a little bit louder. In the distance, a white figure moved toward us at a high rate of speed. We watched it in amazement, as it drew closer we realized it was the massive white dog from the Captain's portrait. The dog gleefully bounded toward us its jowls flapping up and down in time with each stride. In no time, at all it was upon us barking and licking our faces. He towered over Lovely and gave him the typical dog greeting. Lovely barked at him. The new dog hit the ground and crawled on his belly behind me. Victoria and I started to laugh this joyous noise caused the dog to jump up and run around in circles chasing his tail. When we could no longer draw breath, I commanded him to sit, which he obeyed immediately. Around his neck was a chain with a tag that read "Bogey.”

"Well Bogey nice to meet you." I said reaching out to pat him on the head. To my amazement, my hand past right through him Victoria stood up and shouted

"He is a ghost!" excited Bogey spun around in circles again. Victoria said "What are we suppose to do with a ghost dog?" I patted the bench by the items we had collected Bogey looked at me his head tilted to the side. Lovely put his paws on the bench and sniffed each item then he ran off a little ways and stood in a pointer stance one front paw up tail strait back leaning forward. Bogey watch Lovely with amusement his large mouth open in a big grin. His bottom lip quivered and he a made a coughing sound that resembled laughter. For a second I thought he was too dog brained to understand but he soon went to the bench and sniffed each item. The whistle and the scarf clasp only resulted in a whine and a sorrowful look out to sea. The pipe got him all excited he ran around in circles then bolted toward the black cliffs to the west. I gathered the items as Violet and I exchanged glances and then hurried after the bounding beast that was already almost out of sight. Lovely ran a head of us keeping both of us in view allowing us to keep up without running. When Bogey reached the beach he hesitated making sure we were still behind him before disappearing around a large rock. When Violet and I reached the spot where we last saw him, we were both out of breath but hurried around the stone desperate not to loose him. We did not find him only the opening to a small cave. The black rocks of the archway made the interior seem more menacing Violet took a step closer to me and I took her hand. We crept forward inching our way into the cave. The only sounds were those of the waves crashing into the jagged rocks below and our ragged breaths which seemed to be keeping time with the in and out of the tide. After what only seemed like a few steps, we could no longer see the light of the entrance. Lovely ran back to it and barked verification that it was still there. His bark still eerily bouncing off the walls well after he had returned to our sides I saw a light up ahead so I made my way towards it. After we rounded a small bend, we came to a chamber. Huddled next to a campfire was a Polar Bear slowly turning a fish on a spit without looking up he motioned for us to join him. Shoulder to shoulder Violet and I shuffled over and sat cross-legged on the cold stone. Violet and I exchanged a look that said, "Where is Bogey?" Neither of us spoke however we just sat there watching the fish's slow rotations. When it was done, he laid it in a large wooden bowel. He took a large machete from worn leather sheath at his side and met our gaze. He gave us a big toothy grin and said how much do you women want. Victoria and I shook our heads and said in unison. "No that is Ok you go right ahead." He grinned even bigger and squired the fish with the machete. In one fluid motion, he swallowed it whole. Licking his lips, he said

"Ah a wonderful meal if I only had a pipe to smoke!" As he leaned back against the stonewall. I took the pipe from my purse and handed it to him. He took it gently with massive paws. He studied it closely for awhile then his head sank to his chest at first I thought he had fallen asleep but soon realized his massive shoulders were shaking.

Violet and I both ran to his side. We placed our hands on him and discovered he was very old and frail. His tattered and mud splattered black clothes hung loosely around his body. We were unsure what to say so we stood there silently for a while until he collected himself. We took our places across from him again and he filled the pipe with tobacco. Slowly he stoked it breathing in the sweat smoke. For the first time since we arrived, he really looked at us and asked.

"What brings you so far out?" I cleared my throat and said

"To tell you the truth we fallowed ghost dog named Bogey whom led us here after sniffing that pipe." I shrugged my shoulders knowing it sounded preposterous. He nodded and smoked on as if he heard it all before. We were silent again, for a while then he spoke his words filling the cave with such warmth that the fire shivered with jealousy.

"When I was a young pup," he began the detective in me noting he referred to himself as a pup not a cub. "I road the rails hopping from one freight car to another. I probably would have continued to do so forever but when I jumped onto the Pumpkin Ville Express, I hurt my back paw. It became infected and when I arrived at the station, I was delirious with fever. According to the Captain whom was waiting at the station for his bride I stumbled out of the car weaving and wobbling all over the place. He watched in horror as I swayed close to the edge of the platform. He reached out and grabbed my collar and I unceremoniously fainted into his arms. Just then his Fiance exited the train when she saw her ruff and burly husband-to-be she almost turned around and got back on. She told me on her death bed that it was the look of concern for me that made her run to him instead of away. She and the Captain nursed me back to health and raised me as their son. The Captain and I spent many hours talking and smoking pipes. The year before his death for his birthday I carved him this pipe. After he died I felt like an outsider so I left the main house and move to this cave soon everyone who knew who I was was either dead or long gone and I became my namesake The Bogey-man" Violet and I started in surprise. Was this ghost dog who had lead us here? To affirm what we were thinking the polar bear with dirty black clothes faded and the white dog with black brindle spots appeared.

"I am sorry to have deceived you but I am really a big coward. I had to find out if you were friend or foe. There are many who have sought the Captains treasure but none have been worthy of it until now. Here take this it will lead you to your next clue" he said and handed me a small gold compass. He stood he used a smoldering stick to light a small lantern then put the stick and the rest of the fire out with some wet sand turning to us he said. "I will walk you Ladies out." he walked us down the path to the cave opening when we reached it he bid us farewell. Violet, Lovely and I started our slow trek back to the inn. Just as we were about to round the corner of the bluff I felt compelled to look back. Bogey stood in the entrance of the cave when he saw me watching he gave a little wave then he turned into a puff of smoke and a cool ocean breeze carried him upwards. He had finally completed this final task so he could at last go home to be with his adopted parents.
