Miscellaneous

There are a number of different works listed on this page.

Op. 1 "The Lord's Prayer" was my first piece that I completed and felt worthy to keep.  I wanted to write a version of this famous prayer that actually sounded like prayer, as contrasted to bombastic romantic pieces that are fit only for large concert halls, not small prayer chambers.  It is for SATB choir and piano.

Op. 4 'To Jesus On His Birthday' uses the text of a famous poem written by Edna St. Vincent-Millay, that decries the commercialization of Christmas.  It is for solo Soprano and piano.

Op 5 'As a Ring' is a song I wrote for a Ward Youth program in Omaha NE in 1983 or so.  My wife Bette wrote the poem (text) and asked me to add music, a duet for Soprano and Bass solos plus piano.  She and a member of our Ward Choir sang it for the Youth activity.

Op. 7 'A Pilot's Prayer' is also from my time at Offutt AFB in Omaha NE from 1982 - 85.  I was then a new 2Lt in the USAF.  Many years before that, at BYU in Provo UT in April 1967, I and another new Missionary (Elder Savage) were at the Language Training Mission for a few days awaiting visas to travel to our Mission headquarter in Hong Kong (Southern Far East Mission, Apr 1967 - Sep 1969).  There was no language training in Chinese for us at the LTM, so in a bit of free time we went to the BYU Harris Fine Arts Center for an exhibition of US Air Force art works.  I was impressed by the paintings and wrote a poem about it.  Many years later I set it to music for TTBB and piano.

Op. 20 'No Room' is from the passage in Luke 2 where Joseph and Mary cannot find usual lodging.  There is a 'twist' at the end to bring the moral of the story home to the listener.  It is for SATB choir and piano.

Op. 25 'This Is My Joy' - text is Alma 29:9 in the Book of Mormon.  There is a famous LDS song on the text of Alma 29:1 'O that I were an angel' - I have performed it in Ward and Stake choirs - and Alma 29:7 specifically refutes his statement in verse 1, saying 'Why should I desire that I were an angel...?'.  This song is my 'reply' to the one written from verse 1, emphasizing Missionary Work.  It is for SATB choir and piano.  SA sing the first part of the verse, followed by TB singing the second part, then all join in a rhapsody on the phrase 'this is my joy'.  I originally wrote this with Cakewalk, then later entered it into Finale.

Op. 31 is a 'Gloria' for SATB choir and piano.

Op.34 'Hear Me, Lord' is very Psalm-like, but I wrote the text.  It is for SATB choir and piano.

Op.67 "Christmas 2020" for Soprano + piano.  I had the idea for this while driving home from the pharmacy.  This is my hope as we enter 2021 and see the Covid-19 pandemic recede.

Op.78 "Maricopa March" is a military-style march for the Maricopa County Community Colleges.
