WHERE DO WE COME FROM, TOM?

TOM SIMMONS presented our Program last week, explaining the western migration of 1833 that brought settlers like Thomas & Ralph Ware from Conway & Granville Massachusetts (5 miles from Tom’s own home town of Granby, Connecticut) to a place they’d later name Granville, Illinois! They might have settled instead in Chicago, a town of some 200 people, but they reported the place had too little activity and less prospect for growth; They were headed for St. Louis but were turned back by reports of a cholera outbreak there, so they wintered and eventually settled here – and the rest is history! Granby, by the way was the site of the first unofficially minted US Coin AND the first federal prison, “hosting” British soldiers! Thanks for the “back story,” Tom!!

BACK FROM BRAZIL!

ADRIANE SHORE’S program last week featured Scott & Adriane’s VERY recent travels to attend the Rotary International Convention in Sao Paulo Brazil! Arriving home that afternoon, the Shores made it back in time to tell about the amazing, great experience of both seeing Brazil AND attending the Convention with more than 12,000 Rotarians from all over the world. They first attended a pre-conference event for Youth Exchange leaders, meeting many fine Rotarians and students from or headed toward other parts of the globe. The Conference was packed with amazing projects, Rotarians from around the world – many in colorful dress representing their culture, and fellowship in every language and in every sense of the word! Plenary sessions featured fantastic entertainment, incredible speakers, and the chance to meet our Rotary International President and President-Elect & their families. The Shores attended several smaller breakout groups to learn and share new strategies for membership recruitment, Foundation support, and the potential for organization of Rotary Alumni – those who have participated in Rotary programs in the past, many of whom appreciate the opportunity to stay in touch and to stay involved!

Interested in attending an RI Convention? Our next opportunities are in Seoul Korea, then on to Atlanta, Toronto, Germany & Hawaii!

IN THE NEWS BASKET…

· We donated $100 to the MP Relay for Life walk last week – a great success thanks to those who organized and participated! We’re “sizing up” the possibility and process of ordering PC Rotary polo and t-shirts!

· Meeting Meal update: The Board has suggested a “chicken night” with every Club Assembly – generally the first regular meeting of each month! There will be 2 meal choices/meeting (not part of our deal with Pagan’s to order off the menu); & to avoid confusion we’ll pay our server as we order.

· 50-50 Update – money and ticket stubs are coming in strong! The committee hopes to wrap things up tonight!

· Christmas in July – Plans are set for donation collections on July 18 from 9 to11am at 89/71 & events at McNabb on July 25! Rotarians to donate bottles of water, hot chocolate packets & marshmallows! – Check with Debbie B. for amounts needed!

Rescue missions and emergency aid continue to arrive in Nepal after the massive 7.8 earthquake hit the country on 25 April, killing at least 7,500 people and injuring thousands more, leaving 1.4 million in need of food assistance, affecting 8 million people.

LAST WEEK IS “HISTORY” NOW!

LONNA NAUMAN hosted Peggy Smith last week to tell us how Magnolia’s history is being preserved for the ages. As Dr. Winters (Magnolia Veterinarian and Dentist) warned years ago, those of us who have not fled to larger urban areas are left to record and preserve our rich history! It was in Magnolia, in 1831, at the home of Captain Haws (Betty’s Grandfather’s Uncle), that the original commissioners met to formally incorporate Putnam County, choosing Hennepin as its county seat. At one point, the population of Magnolia was 2,700, with two main streets, 5 or 6 physicians, thriving schools and more. Darrell Alleman, though only 85, recounted some of the milestone events of earlier days and his own founding of “The Country Castle” youth dance hall, his first marital residence with Jeanne at Ramsey Hotel, and the legend of the brick house south of Magnolia which, together with the William & John Lewis home in town, were safe-houses on the underground railroad in the days that Stage Coach Road was indeed the stage coach road -- heading to Chicago! Peggy is also part of Magnolia’s rich culture and history, the granddaughter of Lloyd Billups who was mayor for 17 years, fire chief and more. Peggy likewise wears a lot of hats including those of an EMT, a Fire Dept. volunteer, a Village Board member, Magnolia baseball organizer, and Magnolia Librarian for 29 years as of this week! With the help of Lonna and others, Peggy is launching a contribution-supported museum to house and display the many items of Magnolia history she has collected for the community, incl. those items she brought to share with us last week!

WHAT’S A ROTARY DISTRICT??

The most vital part of Rotary International is the individual Rotarian – US! Rotarians in local Clubs are benefited by area-wide, regional and international structure that allows us to collaborate & do more, with greater efficiency & greater impact!

PC Rotary and 48 Clubs throughout northern / north-western Illinois are part of a “Rotary District” – in our case, District 6420, running from the Wisconsin border on the north, Mississippi on the west, Sandwich and Marseilles on the east, and Streator, Toluca, Wenona and Lacon to the south. The combined "energy" of our District offers opportunities to learn, network & collaborate!

District-Wide Projects include, for example: RYLA -- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards -- a weekend camp experience for high school youth in early May… District Scholarships for undergraduate, post-graduate, & peace and conflict resolution studies…District Conference & Leadership Training events building stronger Clubs and better friendships…Youth Exchange – Full-year & Summer-time exchanges for high-school age youth!

The District is headed up by the District Governor who serves a one-year term, District Officers, and a compact list of committees who oversee projects such as Rotary Foundation Grants & Support, Youth Exchange, RYLA, Emergency Disaster Relief, & a lot more! Our several Clubs in the Illinois Valley are served by an AG – Assistant District Governor.

Districts combine to form area-wide alliances and regional Zones --for fun and to better serve humanitarian projects.…, and we’re ALL part of Rotary International, consisting of some 1.2 million members in 33,000+ Clubs in some 170 countries and geographic regions world-wide! TOGETHER WE’RE BETTER!

OUR SPEAKER TONIGHT…..

We welcome Jeff Peterson, President of Marquis Grain, and Commodities Risk Manager of Marquis Energy! Jeff’s topic is “Ethanol: Fueling Our Local Economy.” Founded by the local farm family that still owns and operates the company, the plant commenced operation in 2008, initially producing 100 million gallons which quickly increased to 140-million gallons per year, processing some 51 million bushels of corn annually. In addition to its ethanol output, the operation also produces a valuable by-product, dried distiller grain used for high quality livestock feed. Soon to double in size and production, the company ships by barge, rail and truck, marketing domestically and world-wide.

Our speaker was raised on a grain & livestock farm near Manlius, and is a 1987 graduate of ISU with a BA in Ag Business. His professional career as a grain merchandiser and farm market advisor eventually brought him home in 1993 to serve as a grain elevator and dispatch manager for Marquis Grain’s country elevators, before Marquis’ investment shift to ethanol production.

POLIO DAY came to Putnam County a day early and a dollar LONG last Thursday, as 10-year-old Paul Harris Fellow LILLIAN SANDBERG expanded on last summer’s fundraising efforts by taking her message to PC Elementary School – the WHOLE school, in fact! Lillian addressed all 175 students with her inspirational, eye-opening explanation of the disease, the progress we’ve made to nearly overcome it, and what KIDS can do to close the gap! Lillian involved her fellow students in a “Coin War” to raise money, and raise money they did -- $874 in fact, which grew to just over $1,000 with our Happy Bucks happily helping the cause last Thursday! Lilly and Brandy also expanded upon the world Rotary theme of painting purple pinkies, adding a bit of polish to nearly every PCES student ---signifying each child’s vaccination and bringing home the fact that so many children world-wide are still waiting to be reached. WAY TO GO, LILLIAN!

Half are children, 80% are female, and the problem is as close as right here in the Illinois Valley. Harris was born on 19 April 1868 to George H. and Cornelia Bryan Harris in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. In July 1871 Harris and his older brother, Cecil, were sent to live with their paternal grandparents in Wallingford, Vermont. After setting up his law practice in Chicago, Harris gathered several business associates to discuss the idea of forming an organization for local professionals.

On 23 February 1905 Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting. By 1910 Rotary had expanded to several other major U.S. cities. Harris recognized the need to form an executive board of directors and a national association. In August 1910 Rotarians held their first national convention in Chicago, where the 16 existing clubs unified as the National Association of Rotary Clubs. The new association unanimously elected Harris as its president. Harris met Jean Thomson, Scottish-born daughter of John and Ann Younson Thomson, during an outdoor excursion of what would later become the Prairie Club. They married on 2 July 1910 in Chicago. The couple had no children and Jean joined Harris on his visits to Rotary clubs around the world. In his book “This Rotarian Age” (1935), Harris explored what causes people to do good things and described how Chicago in 1905 was ripe for the kind of change Rotary could offer. He also addressed Rotary’s future challenges and its potential as a force for world peace. In October 1928, he returned to his boyhood home for the charter night celebration of the Rotary Club of Wallingford. And the rest…… is history!

WELCOME TO ROTARY !

October 9, 2014

…AND WELCOME TO PAGAN O’LEARY’S! PRESIDENT JUSTINA hosts tonight’s CLUB ASSEMBLY !!!

LAST WEEK’S EVENT: THE LIFE OF “PIE”

Parents In Education, that is…. Many thanks to those who volunteered time and talent to connect parents with information, from Rotary, Interact and Youth Exchange opportunities, to cyber-bullying, drug-avoidance, and meeting today’s challenges. We had a lot of Rotarians and PCHS Interactors participating!

TWO WEEKS AGO IN LONDON….

President JUSTINA CHLUM hosted JORDON GROH, District 6420's Global Grant Scholar from the Rockford Rotary Club – and his bride of just over one year, Danielle! Jordan was selected by our District in 2012 as the recipient of this world-renown scholarship, and has been studying in London at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London working toward a masters in Migration, Mobility, and Development. He is in the process of completing his dissertation on the Implications of Defection from North Korea upon the government of North Korea --and has just recently returned to Rockford. He said the Rotary Scholarship is not publicized and depends upon Rotarians’ personal connections to promising college students to apply. Of Rotary, Jordan says Clubs are the same world-over in many respects, particularly in their commitment to service above self -- regardless of whether they’re pledging a flag or toasting the Queen! Thanks for hosting, Justina!

WHAT IS ROTARY???

Harvard Business School says in its September 2014 blog edition that Rotary is working to overcome our past over-complexity in our image, and (2) the challenge to provide a consistent unified answer to the oft-spoken question, “What is Rotary?” The author gives us full credit for our new website that caters to the non-member’s curiosity, our effort to reduce Rotary’s message to a simple, descriptive answer – and a new, simpler, updated emblem! So what’s Rotary? And how do we answer in a way that is “relevant” in a new-age world? We should show off our essence, hide our complexities, and simplify our communication: invite others to join leaders for club meetings; exchange ideas to solve community problems; and take action to create positive change in our local communities and in our world. Let’s put our short-sweet message and new image to work!

ROAD APPLE BINGO--FOR FUN & PROFIT!

Fundraising hit the grid running at Boggio’s Fall Festival on 9/26, netting LaSalle Rotarian John Steele $1,000 -- and putting $50 into the pockets of ten other drawing winners! MANY Thanks to Debbie, Brandy, Larry, Tom, and all who helped sell ALL 450 tickets for making the event another PC Rotary SUCCESS!

COMING UP:

WELCOME TO ROTARY !

September 25, 2014

…AND WELCOME TO PAGAN O’LEARY’S! PRESIDENT JUSTINA CHLUM presides over tonight’s meeting, and hosts JORDON GROH, District 6420's Global Grant Scholar from the Rockford Rotary Club! Jordan was selected by our District in 2012 and has been studying in London at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, completing his degree in Migration, Mobility, and Development. He is in the process of completing his dissertation on the Implications of Defection from North Korea upon the government of North Korea --and has just recently returned to Rockford. WELCOME, JORDON GROH !!

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE AFTER ALL!

DUANE CALBOW hosted our Program two weeks ago, with two of Putnam County’s finest – Sheriff’s Deputy JACOB FRUND and his crime-biting partner ROXIE! Roxie is a state-certified dual-purpose canine officer, well-schooled in drug detection and learning the ropes as a tracker. It may be all fun for Roxie, but it’s a LOT of work for her partner – 24/7 and then some! Deputy Frund noted that the purchase, training and care of the dog is all community-funded: No tax dollars at work! Support is welcome, with fundraisers always in the works such as collector “trading cards” of Roxie that an individual or group can sponsor. The Program ended with a live demonstration of Roxie’s drug-sniffing prowess, alerting enough to tell her partner where to find the drugs that were hidden before Roxie was brought inside our dining room. THANKS, DUANE!!

ROAD APPLE BINGO THIS SATURDAY 1PM!

LAST WEEK’S TRAVELS…

NINE PC ROTARIANS made the trek to Dixon to help celebrate our District’s 100th birthday! The Program took six years to create and recalled the founding of our District’s Clubs, the life of service represented by past District Governors, & some District genealogy that is alive & well in the present-day Rotarian descendants of past leaders. Among the many dusty facts of our past is the history of our District boundaries, which included Chicago for many years, spanning two states for a while, occasionally dropping and then regaining the Quad Cities, and now covering all of north central and northwestern Illinois! One of the leaders of our past was District Governor Herb Brown, who came up with the 4-Way Test to boost morale in a post-depression aluminum factory before it went “viral” -- and Herb too…. Becoming an RI President! Varna Rotarian J. Turner Mills served as District Governor in 1967-68 & helped charter OUR CLUB on May 22, 1967! Turner’s son Ed, daughter-in-law Kay, and son-in-law Don Nelson were all members of our Club in various years. The one constant throughout our Rotary history is SERVICE ABOVE SELF – and plenty of it! HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, DISTRICT 6420!

WELCOME TO ROTARY !

September 11, 2014

…AND WELCOME TO PAGAN O’LEARY’S! PRESIDENT JUSTINA CHLUM presides over tonight’s meeting, and DUANE CALBOW will host tonight’s Program, with two of Putnam County’s finest – Sheriff’s Deputy JACOB FRUND and his partner in fighting crime, ROXIE! PC’S newest crime-fighter came on board on January 10, at age 17 months, as a state-certified dual-purpose drug detection dog and tracker. The pair first had to graduate from an intensive 160-hour training course to become certified, and we’ll here from BOTH tonight about their partnership and successes on the job. WELCOME, ALL, TO PUTNAM COUNTY ROTARY!

A Time To Pause… And To Remember

We can likely all remember where we were on this day in 2001, and what we were doing when the terror of the day’s news began to hit… the horror of the events that followed… and the fear that struck as we came to realize our vulnerability and the enormity of our loss. Today is a day to remember those we lost and to honor those who gave their lives in the hopes of saving others. Our strength is their legacy.

LAST WEEK’S TRAVELS…

DEBBIE BUFFINGTON took us to Italy last week, following her recent travels to find her Italiano roots – and her surprise in finding not only her family heritage, but some cousins & relatives too! The mountain villas from which Debbie’s famiglia had immigrated to the US was also the home of many other proud Italian Illinois Valley families, proving that it’s a small world, after all! THANKS, DEBBIE!

LAST WEEK’S MAIN EVENT…

RANDY BORIO hosted our program last week, featuring the Right Worshipful Brother DANIEL YANDEL, a Past Grand Master of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois and a 33rd Degree Master Mason! Our guest told us about the Safe Schools Program a/k/a Student Assistance Program, sponsored and inspired by Masons to educate educators and school staff in recognizing and addressing student concerns of all shapes and sizes… and ILChIP, The Illinois Child Identification Program that puts DNA, video and other identifying info in the hands of parents in case of abduction or disappearance. Both projects are funded by the Illinois Grand Lodge and local Masonic Lodges. Randy and Ron McNeill are members of the local Masonic lodge. THANKS FOR A GREAT PROGRAM, RANDY!

ROTARY ON THE MOVE….

Our Club’s name and original identity came from the idea of rotating meeting places, and true to our history, we’re at it again! With the future of Ray’s Place still uncertain, tonight’s discussion will include alternatives and the possibility of trying out a new location before making a final commitment. Options include PC restaurants, or meeting places and catered meals. Your input please!!!

INTERACT BLOOD DRIVE SUCCESS!

THE PCHS Interact’s Back-To-School Blood Drive Mon, Aug. 25, drew in 30 willing donors, of which 7 were deferred and a total of 23 units were collected. This included 15 students, four of whom were first-time donors! -- All pretty great considering the challenge incurred when the day’s record temperatures required that we re-mobilize from the heat of the gym to the air-conditioned auditorium. Interact had a total of 23 volunteers, several of whom also donated, aided by a total of 7 Rotarian volunteers – and another who came to donate! BIG thanks to all who volunteered and donated!!

In addition to her favorite activities (reading, running, baking …and volunteering!), Lilly is helping the Rotary cause of eradicating Polio worldwide, and raised $660 through bake sales and recycling cans and scrap, to fund 1,100 immunizations! – a number that will triple with added Rotary match-money! Lillian suggests that we bring the message to the schools, to raise awareness and enlist students’ help. Pres. Justina presented Lillian with a certificate as a new Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member – and her parents will add to the honors by donating $340 to make her a full “Paul Harris Fellow!” Brenda called upon others present to share experiences of friends and family affected by polio. In addition to her fundraising talents, Lilly was recently recognized for reading over 1 million words and all 20 Illinois Blue Stem books! She was the driving force behind a Sandberg family project, adding AR labels to the entire PC Library District juvenile collection to make it easier for children to find books at their own reading level, encouraging them to use the library & read more! WELCOME, LILLY !

WE ALSO WELCOME Dr. BUD & DIANE PHILLIS, hosted by ADRIANE SHORE! Bud is a member of Rock Island Rotary and has visited us before, as a member of the District Polio-Plus Committee, and shares our interest in sharing the quest for a polio-free world with “generation next!” Welcome, Bud & Diane!

“FIELD OF DREAMS” NIGHT -A HOME RUN!

Baseball hats off to DARRELL ALLEMAN for dreaming up the perfect event – and to all who “pitched in” to help pull it off ! For those who missed the “game,” the lineup included “Field of Dreams” ghost player Frank Dardis’ grand entrance from the cornstalks – along with seven other ghost players from the original movie set ! Frank and his “team members” presented the Allemans with a proclamation naming Alleman Field as an official “Field of Dreams” ballpark – and pledging to return annually if invited to come! Area youth teams came in uniform and were introduced by their coaches, each then greeted by Mr. Dardis, after which the “ghost squad” practiced some infield play & fun antics with the young ball players, before our showing of the original movie on Sunset Cinema’s 25’ screen! Build it & they’ll come, and come they did – about 2-300 attended our community celebration of the movie’s 25th anniversary!

INTERACT IN ACTION

OUR ANNUAL INTERACT COOKOUT drew a hungry crowd of Rotarians, PCHS Interact members & incoming freshmen, presenting an opportunity to showcase Interact’s agenda for the coming year, Rotary’s support, and the opportunities of Summer Youth Exchange through the experiences of Austin Pletsch who was in Italy last summer, and Ashley Ohrtmann of Freeport & Ursi Karrer of Austria who are spending THIS summer together! Thanks to all who helped cook & who added great food to the potluck picnic!

PCHS INTERACT’S FIRST PROJECT OF THE YEAR – supervising kids at Mark Celebration’s Bounce House activity area – netted them a profit of $756 and a lot of good will – thanks also to our Rotary volunteers who helped out!

NEXT UP… a PCHS Blood Drive on Mon, 8/25, 9am-1pm –Community members welcome!

If you see this news bulletin and let us know, there's a PRIZE waiting for YOU!

NEXT BATTER UP:

PC Rotary Hosts “Field Of Dreams” Night

Fortunately, some people never stop dreaming big and PC Rotarian Darrell Alleman, at age 85, is one of those people!

Taken with the story of Field of Dreams, Darrell re-created a ball field on his farm, with all the markings of a mini-Wrigley field – even sporting a similar scoreboard and “exit signs” for Alleman field, off the two-lane road leading to his farm. The Allemans allow area teams, families and others to use the diamond, free of charge.

Build it and they will come, says Darrell. On August 8 the Club and the Allemans will find out just how many WILL come, when they co-sponsor a Field of Dreams” Night, celebrating the movie’s silver anniversary with guest “ghost” Frank Dardis, who portrayed one of the “Black Sox” players in the movie. The event, free to all area children and their families, will include an introduction of area youth baseball teams, Frank’s “ghost humor,” some infield practice, autographs, and a showing of the 1989 movie, “Field of Dreams,” in the outfield.

It was a crazy idea, say some of the Club’s 32 members, but we love crazy ideas! Several businesses, local village boards, and individuals including the Allemans and several fellow Rotarians are pitching in to cover the expenses. Who knows who else might come out of the rows of corn surrounding the field to enjoy the show!

TOM SIMMONS (remotely) hosted our May 15 Program, featuring KEN & LINDA TROYAN who have returned to Ken’s McNabb-area roots with a new business venture that is really “cleaning up!” Ken says the OxyGreen Carpet Cleaning franchise he purchased will freshen the place up, using designer chemicals and a low-moisture method – with no hoses jamming doors meant to keep pets IN! The service also includes mattresses and furniture. The Troyans were thanked for their program AND for volunteered at the AFTERGLOW! Thanks for hosting, TOM !

LORRAINE TERANDO hosted a specially scheduled program featuring Master Gardener BARB DAHLBACH of Toluca, who told us more than we might have guessed about the level of education and dedication, including community service, earning the title of “Master Gardener!” Barb has taken on an amazing project, hatched last spring to teach low-income families how to grow and prepare fresh vegetables combining sustainable gardening with healthy food preparation! The U of I Extension project hopes to “grow” from 25 families last year to 500+ Marshall-Putnam participants, through seed & supplies distribution at local food pantries. Rotarians can help identify those who may benefit from the program, and we can help by donating gardening tools ------- and those with a garden can set aside a row for our local Food Pantry!

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

ADRIANE SHORE hosted Carol Miller who also brought with her JoAnne Lee, to tell us about plans for this year’s second annual COLORS FOR ARIE 5K Run/Walk, set for Saturday, May 24. Carol shared the story of how their plan for a 5K gained a cause, a theme, and amazing momentum when the first year’s event surpassed the original goal more than EIGHT TIMES OVER! The event serves as a memorial to Carol’s daughter, Arie Boggio, bringing awareness to the reality of suicide and the need to recognize signs of depression that CAN be prevented! The “COLORS” theme, she says, is the perfect way to remember Arie’s bright and colorful personality and to keep the mood happy and full of life. This year’s profits will benefit CPASA, Community Partners Against Substance Abuse. Registration is $25 in advance or $30 at the “gate” (in front of the Courthouse) -- price includes a shirt and a color powder cup for the opening “blast.” Small kids need not register and are welcome to share in the fun --and to lift the mood! THANKS FOR HOSTING, ADRIANE!

ANDY JACKSON was able to make it after all, with guests GREGG CARR & GLORIA DUN of Putnam County Emergency Services! Our guests explained the several levels of emergency care offered by PC EMS, the importance of volunteer first responders, and the use of new technology to diagnose and communicate remotely with physicians – but with technology comes cost, and PC EMS is in the process of replacing some not-so-state-of-the-art equipment very soon! AND DID YOU KNOW…. If requiring an ambulance transfer, you can designate PC EMS – and it helps EVERYONE financially – EMS gets the insurance money generated, and may write off the rest! Thanks for a great program, ANDY !!

ROSANNE MAIER’s program featuring PC Third Grade Teachers’ dictionary report will have to wait, but Rosanne shared with us a bit of her family story -- one of 11 siblings whose parents’ dinner table was always full, and always open to neighbors as well! The family moved from LaSalle to Cedar Point when Dad bought a tavern there. Given the choice of cooking or waitressing, she readily chose to wait tables – but now LOVES to cook -- especially, she says, in large quantities, so restaurant work is a perfect fit! She’s “Mom” to six, & “Grandma” to 13, with #14 coming soon! THANKS, ROSANNE!

ONCE UPON A TIME (BACK IN 2013)….

Our CHRISTMAS PARTY two weeks ago was a great combination of fun, fellowship and great food! Thanks to Sandy for setting things in motion, & to Brenda for the after-dinner treats! And it really was better to give than to receive, as we gathered an entire sleigh-full of paper goods, toiletries and more for the PC Food Pantry that evening – plus the donation of our happy bucks to purchase even more – all very gratefully received by Food Pantry staff and, we can be sure, by their clients! Thanks to all who donated to the cause!!!

TOYS IN THE PANTRY THANKS!

A BIG THANK YOU to all who helped wrap on December 18 (9 Rotarians + volunteers!), and to all six Rotarians who helped with pick-up of Pantry Christmas Baskets and TOYS on December 21! Club Condolences….

To the family of Sharon Acuncius Goldasich, who tragically lost her life this Monday in an auto accident, losing control of her vehicle on a slippery overpass on I-39 en route home from Bloomington. JUST TWO WEEKS AGO…..

BETTY JOHNSON hosted our program two weeks ago, presented by PASTOR CAROL STUFFELBEAM regarding Putnam County’s “Backpack Ministry” – discretely getting a weekend’s supply of food into the backpacks of students who qualify for free lunches at school! All area churches are invited to participate in the ministry, now in its second year, making it possible to send students home with enough for four meals – up to eight if an extended weekend – at a cost of about $2.25 for a 2-day pack. The Project will continue into the summer, distributing food at each of the local parks. Pastor Carol said that 232 children receive free lunches at school this year in our school district, a drastic increase from the 116 students signed up the year before. Pastor Carol is originally from RR Glasford, mom to three and grandma to eight, with a background that included cake decorating, directing Alzheimer patient activities, leading a Girl Scout Council, and, since 2010, serving the United Methodist Church’s New Hope Parish including the Hennepin, Magnolia and McNabb churches – and she packs backpacks, too!

NO BOREDOM IN THE BOARDROOM!

The ENTIRE Board met on Monday to discuss the following: (1) Routine bills approved for payment; (2) Poinsettia Project expansion into Senachwine Twp. will be possible this year with the help of Pastor Terry Broady of the Putnam Christian Church! Seniors there will be able to call in to reserve plants for pickup at the Church. DELIVERY DATE IS DEC. 7th ! Route lists MAY be ready for review tonight! (3) PCJH Interact Charter Night Oct. 29 was a success – Sandy organized the event, Brenda emcee’d, Dist. Gov. Ruth Lee performed the installation of officers and directors, Scott explained the connection to Rotary, Service above Self and the Four Way Test, and Asst. Gov. J. Burt offered congratulations to all! Many thanks to 11 Rotarians who came and to all who donated baked and brought goodies! (4) Congrats to Jay McCracken and Jordan Ellena – both recognized as Champions by the IL Small Business Dev. Center! (5) Rotary Foundation “happy bucks” have added up – and are available as “match money” for anyone wishing to donate! A $50 donation between now and December 5 will be matched (to give $100 credit), and NEW donors get another $50 match from the Club -- See Sandy to get in on the deal! WELCOME TO ROTARY !

October 24, 2013

WELCOME! Pres. BRENDA hosts tonight’s meeting, and BETTY JOHNSON hosts our program to be presented by PASTOR CAROL STUFFELBEAM to tell us about “backpackin’” for a cause! Our speaker is originally from RR Glasford, but has seen a lot of the US before returning to the territory. She is mom to three and grandma to eight, with a background that spanned from cake decorator to Activities Director for an Alzheimer’s unit to Field Exec for a Girl Scout Council, to her calling to the ministry, ordained as an Elder on June 7 of this year. Since 2010 she has served the United Methodist Church’s New Hope Parish including the Hennepin, Magnolia and McNabb churches. Pastor Carol holds a bachelors in Church Leadership from Iowa Wesleyan and a Masters of Divinity from Dubuque Theological Seminary. WELCOME, PASTOR CAROL!!

FEELING PARTICULARLY PURPLE TODAY?

JOIN THE CROWD! Today, throughout the world, Rotarians and supporters of Rotary’s effort TO END POLIO FOREVER are showing their “true colors” with purple pinkies, purple clothes, and purple ATTITUDE! Each time a Rotary volunteer administers a polio vaccine, that child’s pinkie is colored purple to prevent double dosage. In a past issue of the Rotarian magazine, six Ethiopian boys proudly display their purple pinkies as a sign of freedom from polio. The idea went “viral” and today’s our day to THINK PURPLE for polio eradication!! Also consider a donation to the cause – in cash, in quarters, or by offering a monthly pledge at www.rotary.org GIVE!

INTERACT HALLOWEEN SUCCESS!

With the help of many Rotarian bakers, last Sunday’s Grange Halloween Parade and Party organized and hosted by the PCHS Interact was fun for ghosts and goblins of all ages! Thanks to those who donated and helped -- The event netted a LOT of canned goods and net cash profits (to be determined), all for the benefit of the PC Food Pantry! It was truly an “interactive” experience for all!

NEW BUSINESS

We voted last week to dedicate one week’s happy bucks to Polio Eradication! We will continue to donate the first Thursday’s catch to Toys In The Pantry, and will now designate the second week to “End Polio Now,” and the remaining Thursdays of each month will be earmarked for Rotary Foundation “match” money for future donors!

Rotarians provided the “canteen” refreshments for donors and staff. Interact members handled check-in, escorted donors, helped us unload and re-load the Red Cross truck, and met briefly to plan for this fall. THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED --&TO ALL WHO DONATED BLOOD !!!!
