DEBBIE BUFFINGTON HOSTS!

Debbie will share her experience as a guardian for the Honor Flight. Some interesting history of the Honor Flight program. The inaugural Honor Flight Tour took place in May of 2005. Six small planes flew out of Springfield, Ohio taking twelve World War II veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, DC. In August of 2005, an ever-expanding waiting list of veterans led our transition to commercial airline carriers with the goal of accommodating as many veterans as possible. Partnering with HonorAir in Hendersonville, North Carolina, we formed the "Honor Flight Network." Today, we continue working aggressively to expand our programs to other cities across the nation.

CLUB ASSEMBLY

What an inspiring story from Chad Anderson last week. Chad gave us his personal background and the background of the government in South Africa before telling some of the great activities he has been accomplishing. He is assigned to Hatfield Rotary Club. One project that he has helped with is a golf outing that helps raise money for wheelchairs. This Rotary Club has planted a tree in Chad’s honor. Chad has helped deal with malnutrition in children by education the parents. Chad wrote a grant for fruit trees to be planted so that there would be nutritious food available and would not be expensive to the villagers. He has also taught English in these areas of Africa. Chad had a friend whose life was taken from Malaria and he then became very focused on helping prevent additional deaths. Chad became the Malaria coordinator for Botswana and teamed up rap artists and the ministry of health to make a video about Malaria prevention. Wenona Junior Women’s Club and Fieldcrest Schools have been large supporters of Chad’s many projects. They helped raise money to build a bakery so that some of the village women can have a form of income. Chad has started a basketball team and helped build a park that now has the best basketball court in the country. Everyone could see how many lives Chad has touched and he has plans to continue on his journey and Be a Gift to the World!!

Andy Rowe Hosts - CHAD ANDERSON

District 6420 2016 Ambassadorial Scholar

Born & raised in Wenona, Illinois, Chad's international adventures began as a Peace Corp volunteer from 2011 to 2014 in Botswana and Mali, Africa, educating villagers on techniques to prevent malaria. He is now pursuing his Masters Degree at the University of Pretoria, partnering with its Center for Sustainable Malaria Control in South Africa. Chad's unique approach involves the use of music as a teaching tool for children --collaborating with malaria experts, musicians and educators, to create a sustainable program that will serve communities and save lives!

Pastor Ron hosted last week's meeting and shared his experiences on the Back Bay Mission trip in Biloxi. Their group helped repair a home by fixing the roof, soffits, deck, bathroom and many other items. The group also helped prepare an apartment for the next person who would be living there. These apartments are set-aside for Veterans who need help getting on their feet. There is a large homeless population in Biloxi but the government does not want to admit it. The police regularly detain and arrest anyone who looks to be homeless. Many of the homeless are scared to be out due to the amount of homeless that are arrested. The group did great work while in Biloxi and also enjoyed much of the local cuisine!!

Last week JAY MCCRACKEN hosted a Field Trip to the new Granville Branch of the Putnam County Library. Librarian Linda Garcia showed us the space, which is ample enough for the library to now host programs. One of those will be the History of Granville. There is a lot of history in this "new" library. There are photos of Putnam County Veterans all throughout the building. There are some very large pieces of art that came from the Hopkins School, which are amazing to see being preserved and enjoyed. The library had a grand opening Saturday April 16th so that the public could see the new space.

Committees to Meet tonight: Field of Dreams, Grants & any other groups that need to assemble...

WELCOME HOME PC ROTARY!

It has been a long time since we have all been together for a meeting. Hopefully everyone made it to the PCHS production of the Wizard of Oz, it was a wonderful experience. Good Friday Blood Drive was a success. Many pints of blood were given during this event (more details to come tonight).

Ag Nite was an overwhelming success. Not only did we get A LOT of praise about the Speaker but about the topic as well. There were 129 paid tickets. And I had a rough count of 125 in the building. The food was great as always, thanks to Hennepin Food Mart. The Ag Nite Committee did a great job!!

Trivia Nite will be rescheduled for a later date. There were no responses to our invitation. We will attempt to this again in the fall. Toluca Rotary has invited our club to join their Trivia Night on Friday April 8th (yes, that is tomorrow!). If you are interested in attending this will be at the Toluca Legion at 7pm and/or join for dinner at Mona’s at 5:30. This event helps their Rotary club raise money for scholarships.

Anyone who had letters to deliver & collect a non-cash donation. Please have the items to Brandy by April 21st.

WELCOME all, to PC ROTARY! President-Elect Randy Borio presides over tonight's CLUB ASSEMBLY.

Last week Edna Daugherty spoke about her job as Activity Coordinator at Starved Rock Lodge. Edna has been employed at the Lodge for 15 years. When she began there were no guided hikes. The Lodge had purchased a trolley and she designed the stops and started building what is now a very active part of the Lodge's business. Many of the early tours incorporated a trolley tour, lunch and then a hike. They now have over 200 guided hikes per year. Edna was also the founder of a walker's club at Starved Rock. The walker's club has a set schedule, they meet every Thursday at 9am, anyone can come, just meet in the lobby. The walker's club goes not only to Starved Rock, but Matthiessen State Park, Buffalo Rock, and other nature preserves. Edna also has hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail (250 miles) on a backpacking trip. She would like to hike the entire Trail someday. Edna blogs about all of her hikes. WELCOME all, to PC ROTARY Committee Assembly!

Last week Betty Johnson hosted Andy Jackson, PCEMS Director. PCEMS was recruited to test a pilot program, in coordination with St. Margaret's Hospital. The program is designed to have paramedics help patients who have been recently discharged from the hospital. This assistance will include a home visit to ensure that the patient has the correct medications, take vital signs, and confirm that the home is safe. The goal is to make it easier for the patient to ask questions/get intervention before a hospital/ER visit is required.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~WELCOME TO ROTARY!
February 4, 2016
WELCOME! PRESIDENT RON McNEILL presides over tonight’s CLUB ASSEMBLY. Welcome, all, to PC ROTARY! Last week LISA JOHNSON hosted Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle. Sheriff Doyle informed us that heroin is a popular topic in the news and that it is in Putnam County and surrounding areas. He also explained that having heroin in our areas is the reason for many increased burglaries. Heroin is different than other drugs in that the addicts will do anything to get their next high. Sheriff Doyle said that it may soon be a requirement for police to carry Narcan with them as a life-saving antidote to heroin.
Excerpt from Rotary News 13-Jan-2016
Rotary members and our partners in the fight to eradicate polio offer our heartfelt condolences and express a deep sadness in the wake of a horrific bomb attack in Quetta, Pakistan, that took the lives of at least 15 security personnel on 13 January. This tragic attack outside a polio immunization center is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by Rotary, our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and the brave women and men on the front lines of our effort to protect all children from the paralyzing effects of polio. While the bombing will be investigated, one thing is clear: The security personnel who were killed died because their job was to protect teams of polio immunizers. We applaud the government's commitment to continue the vaccination campaign throughout Pakistan, which is one of only two countries where the poliovirus is still endemic. Today we pause to honor the sacrifice made by the heroic police officers killed.
2016 – 2017 FOUNDATION CENTENNIAL YEAR
This is early notification of events D6420 will be hosting to recognize the Rotary Foundation’s centennial year. D6420 is hoping to put together a video presentation featuring current and past Foundation supported projects to be shown at a special dinner in November 2016. Sounds like Scott has picked a great year to be DG!!
POLIO PLUS NEWS
Rotary announces $35 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio. In 2015, the world saw historic progress against the paralyzing disease, with just two countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan – reporting a single strain of the wild virus. If the current momentum is strengthened, this year may mark the last case of wild poliovirus. "We are closer than ever to achieving a polio-free world," said Michael K. McGovern, chair of Rotary's International PolioPlus Committee. "To ensure that no child ever again suffer the devastating effects of this disease, we must all ensure that the necessary funds and political will are firmly in place in 2016."
HOW HAPPY ARE WE...?
At the request of the board the Happy Bucks collected for Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus have been remitted to Rotary Foundation. With your help we have collected $266 for Rotary Foundation and $223.75 for Polio Plus. These monies go to help so many people locally (grants) and internationally. Keep being HAPPY!!!
INDIVIDUAL FOUNDATION DONATIONS
Remember that right now if you choose to donate $50 to the Rotary Foundation that the club will remit your donation along with $100 of “Rotary points” to your individual donation account. These monies and points count toward your Paul Harris Fellowship. Russ and Bill Guynn both donated $50 last week and are taking advantage of this opportunity. See Brandy if you are interested!!
Rotary reports that our worldwide membership is 1,225,827 as of 30 November 2015 with growth of 16,336 above the 1 July start figure! Why do we beat the odds faced by all other community and service groups? Each of us finds value in what we do and in who we are, and we likely each express it differently… but it’s all about service, fellowship, and the chance to put our interests and talents to work for others! And THAT’S what we can share with our community – we have a good thing going – invite friends & neighbors to join us!
He is a former States Attorney of LaSalle County, past ROTARIAN, and currently a partner in the law firm of Perona, Peterlin Andreoni & Brolley, LLC, with his branch office based in Oglesby. WELCOME TO ROTARY !
October 29, 2015
WELCOME! PRESIDENT RON presides and GLORIA GIOSTA presents our program about husband Terry’s corporate pride and joy, HOME SHOP Internet Service and Computer Repair. While we often take “connectivity” for granted, someone like Terry is behind the scenes making it all work in Marshall County and beyond !
LAST WEEK’S COMMITTEE ASSEMBLY…
We discussed our Club’s committee structure, and several committees met to
discuss and then share their plans for future events and service projects including:
(1) YOUTH SERVICE: sign-up for the PCHS INTERACT Halloween Parade and Party the following Sunday; Rotary Readers has a full roster for the Fall Semester;
(2) COMMUNITY SERVICE: sign-up to help at and attend the Partners In Education “Hidden in Plain Sight” Program the following Tuesday Night; Red Cross offers to do a training program for “front desk” staff volunteering at blood drives; Poinsettia Distribution to proceed as it has in the past this year;
(3) VOCATIONAL SERVICE: We’ll plan to offer job-shadowing to PCHS Interact students, possibly on a Thursday afternoon, then inviting students to tell about their experiences during our regular dinner meeting;
(4) CLUB SERVICE: Membership Committee will continue to pursue invitation of potential members sponsored by Granville National Bank, First State Bank of McNabb, Village of Mark and possibly others, in addition to a general membership drive;
(5) INTERNATIONAL SERVICE: Two members to celebrate World Polio Day the following day at RI headquarters in Evanston; Club will ramp up support of Rotary Foundation & “End Polio Now” campaign; and…Registration is open for Summer Youth Exchange!
IT’S BEEN A BUSY WEEK!
WORLD POLIO DAY was celebrated last Friday, Oct. 23, with LOTS to celebrate! Rotary’s efforts since 1985 have lessened the incidence polio from 1000 cases a day, to less than 40 in a full year! Twenty five District 6420 Rotarians made their way to RI headquarters where we presented a check for $4,000 generated from the District Golf Outing in September, and we joined Rotarians from District 6440 (Northern Suburbs) to eat lunch and tour the facilities!
GRANT TRAINING was held in Moline on Saturday, October 24, strengthening District commitment to LOCAL GRANTS ($1,500 or less), and GLOBAL GRANTS of $30,000+ -- which we can participate in with other Clubs! Examples: Ottawa Rotary proposes to provide a sustainable supply of parasite-free water in South Sudan; Galena Rotary is asking help to bring Chilean English teachers here to better enable them to prepare Chilean students for a global marketplace. Ideas are ENDLESS and so is the need!
THE INTERACT HALLOWEEN PARADE & PARTY (and FOODraiser for the Food Pantry) all came together with help of 16 Interactors and many Rotarian bakers and volunteers too – thank you to all! An estimated 60 young Trick-Or-Treaters enjoyed the event.
PARTNERS IN EDUCATION on Tuesday was successful in numbers AND in content! Our thanks to all Rotarians who were on hand to help and learn. There were over 50 parents in attendance to experience the “HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT” model bedroom containing scary signs of drug use and depression, educating parents to be aware and alert, and CPASA’s program awakening us to the “here and now” of marketing, using, and fatal abusing of drugs.
NEXT WEEK: Bd Meeting 5:30; Club Assembly (& chicken!) 6:30 !
LAST WEEK’S HEARTFELT STORY
BRENDA BICKERMAN hosted LORI BOEKELOO last week, explaining not only the WHAT but the WHY of her long-time strong support of MARCH OF DIMES! Services go beyond explanation for families such as Lonna Nauman’s son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Shelly, who spoke of their own loss and the support offered to them. We also heard of the tie-in of March of Dimes and Rotary in our efforts to end Polio! In fact, Polio survivor Franklin D. Roosevelt founded March of Dimes to serve afflicted children – the main focus of March of Dimes until approval of the Salk vaccine in 1955, when their mission changed to other childhood diseases. Roosevelt’s dedication to the cause of fighting Polio one dime-at-a-time landed him on the dime coin in 1946 on what would have been his 64th birthday! It’s time again to “give a dime!” Thanks, Brenda!
WELCOME TO ROTARY !
September 17, 2015
WELCOME ALL! PRESIDENT RON PRESIDES tonight, and VP RANDY BORIO hosts our special program, featuring COACH DJ CARROLL of Louisville Kentucky!
Our presenter says his path toward becoming a college athlete and chemical engineer took a sharp turn toward success as a self-made businessman, growing a start-up business into a million-dollar enterprise operating in three states!
Coach Carroll “shares the wealth” of his knowledge and business strategies to encourage and help others reach their own self-styled success! …AND he proves it can be done with a balanced “diet” hobbies, as DJ is an avid fitness enthusiast and a pilot too! Randy has personally arranged for Coach Carroll’s visit, which will include presentations to PCHS students in business & entrepreneurial programs tomorrow!
WELCOME TO ROTARY, COACH CARROLL!
LAST WEEK’S AG ADVENTURES
TINA BERGEN DOLDER hosted our program presenter last week, bringing us FS staffer, Granville resident, and former Interactor TYLER OSBORNE! Our guest told us about "4R Nutrient Stewardship" ---- proper farm nutrient management practices designed to help farmers stay economically sound while also helping to preserve the environment.
THANKS FOR HOSTING A GREAT PROGRAM, TINA!
FIELD OF DREAMS SUCCESS! THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED at the SECOND ANNUAL FIELD OF DREAMS event last Friday, SEPTEMBER 11th at ALLEMAN FIELD! “Build It And They Will Come --- BACK!” We welcomed “Field of Dreams” movie actor FRANK DARDIS and friends whose surprise appearance out of the corn fields last year seemed to bring out an even larger crowd this year! Frank and company presented Darrell with a jersey in memory of Jeanne, played ball to the delight of many young team players, signed autographs and posed for pictures. The evening included recognition of those whose lives were lost on 9-11-01 and the many emergency personnel who put their own lives on the line to help others. Though a bit chilly for some, a number of fans remained to watch the FIELD OF DREAMS – still a cinema “GREAT” after 26 years!
THANKS, DARRELL & FAMILY, for persevering to make magic happen once AGAIN at Alleman Field!!!
INTERACT DRAWS BIG RESULTS!
THE PCHS INTERACT BLOOD DRIVE last Friday netted 31 units! 40 donors came forward to donate – including 11 first-timers! Seven were deferred and another four draws were low-quantity. ALL PRETTY GREAT considering we had only 4 pre-set appointments!
Thanks to all who helped -- and to all who donated!
NEXT WEEK….
BRENDA BICKERMAN will host LORI BOEKELOO, wearer of many hats including that of a long-time strong supporter of MARCH OF DIMES! --- It’s another great opportunity to bring guests!
WELCOME TO ROTARY !
September 10, 2015
WELCOME ALL! PRESIDENT. RON PRESIDES tonight, and TINA BERGEN DOLDER hosts our PROGRAM! Tina’s Guest is TYLER OSBORNE, here to tell us about "4R Nutrient Stewardship" ---- proper nutrient management practices in agriculture, helping farmers stay economically sound while also helping preserve the environment. Tyler was an active Interact member elsewhere in his earlier life and had been to several Rotary meetings while in school! He is currently employed by FS and lives here in Granville. WELCOME BACK TO ROTARY, TYLER !
BUSY DAY TOMORROW!
RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE runs from 9-1 tomorrow at PCHS sponsored by Interact, with our help. Volunteers have enlisted to help unload, and to help with overseeing operations and manning the refreshment station. BEING THE ANNIVERSARY OF 9-11-01, it’s a fitting time to donate in memory and honor of those who lost their lives, and those who risked their lives to save others, in the wake of that day’s tragic events. Please stop by and donate a pint to save others’ lives! We’re hoping for a great turnout for a great cause.
FIELD OF DREAMS follows, tomorrow at 5:30, with introductions of FRANK DARDIS and other team members from the original movie cast! They’ll play ball with the kids, sign autographs, take pictures, and help intro the showing of the movie at dusk! We are proud to co-sponsor the second annual event with Darrell Alleman and family, with fond memories of Jeanne. Darrell and Jeanne were honored last year as Alleman Field was officially named a registered FIELD OF DREAMS! Volunteers are asked to be there at 5pm.
LAST WEEK’S INDOOR PICNIC…
We enjoyed the food AND the air conditioning at our picnic last week, avoiding the 85+ temps but not missing out on any of the fun and fellowship of our “picnic NEAR the park!” Thanks, Ron, for the use of Bonucchi Hall for our meal and meeting! It was also our chance to hear about OWEN MALLERY’s experiences in Germany, hosted by the family of Bennet Scherer whom he and his family hosted for the first half of the summer! Owen and Bennet became fast friends, or maybe brothers, by the end of the summer and are already strategizing their reunion next year! While in Germany, Owen says he was one of the family, and got to enjoy time at the family’s home in Marburg, as well as some travel throughout the area -- including a bit of France! His powerpoint presentation and pictures accentuated Owen’s comments about the beauty of the German country, cities, churches and people. He’s taking his message to his fellow students so hopefully we’ll have even more interest in Rotary Short Term Youth Exchange as students apply this fall for next summer! Know anyone who might be interested? Contact DGE Scott, who chairs the program for our Rotary District!
July 30, 2015
WELCOME, INTERACTORS, ROTARIANS & GUESTS!
INTERACT PRESIDENT OLIVIA LINDSTROM & ROTARY PRESIDENT RON McNEILL share the gavel tonight, welcoming featured guest ROTARY DISTRICT GOVERNOR JIM NELSON!
GOVERNOR JIM is a member of Rockford Rotary, having previously belonged to Rotary in Dixon, and in Newton Iowa as his newspaper career carried him from management to publisher, and finally a retiree! He served in Vietnam with the US Navy “Seabees.” Jim & Linda have 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren, & a great-grandson! Governor Jim heads up our 48 Rotary Clubs throughout North/Northwestern Illinois this year, and makes his OFFICIAL VISIT today with words of Rotary wisdom…. And Rotary Int’l President Ravi’s challenge to us to BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD!
INTERACT is one of many ways to “be a gift” of service to others!
More than 340,000 students world-over belong to INTERACT CLUBS – making a difference in their schools, communities, and as part of global projects, leadership experiences and Youth Exchange!
We welcome all students here today to JOIN INTERACT and share with Rotary the ideal of……… “SERVICE ABOVE SELF!”
WELCOME, ALL, TO PUTNAM COUNTY ROTARY!
WELCOME TO ROTARY, SUSAN TONDI!
TONIGHT we welcome SUSAN TONDI as a member of PC ROTARY, proposed by Scott Shore, and sponsored by NORTH CENTRAL BANK of Hennepin, where she now serves as the Loan Officer! Bank Pres (& long-time Henry Rotarian) DAVE WARD is on hand to help Gov. Jim present the honors! Sue has resided in Standard for 32 years, and has been in banking since 1999. Sue & husband Eric have 2 grown sons, Aaron & Tyler. In her off-time, Sue also enjoys gardening, reading… & her dogs! WELCOME, SUE!!!
NEWS BRIEFS!
KEN TROYAN hosted his own program last week to share with us his singer-songwriter experiences & talents! He said it all began while he was serving in Vietnam. His songs each tell a story, with themes varying from heroism to religious inspiration to travel, playing instruments including guitar, ukulele, mandolin, xylophone and a one-string “can-jo!” Thanks for a great program, Ken!
CHRISTMAS IN JULY last Saturday was one of those “GIFTS TO THE WORLD” for all children who participated -- and for our TOYS IN THE PANTRY Project for which children brought toys as their “entry fee.” Fun foods, craft activities, games, and a visit from Santa made for a great day for kids of all ages, Rotarians included! Thanks to all who helped out in every way!
CONGRATULATIONS, TINA! Tina Bergen & Ed Dolder FINALLY tied the knot last Thursday! The newlyweds have two children, Miley and Austin. Congratulations to the WHOLE family!
NIGERIA: ONE YEAR POLIO-FREE as of July 23! It was the last African country to be plagued with polio since Rotary’s efforts began in 1985! We’ve come a long way…. Just 10 years ago, polio struck 12,631 African children in one year!
LORRAINE TERANDO hosted massage therapist GWEN BRAY as our Program Presenter last week! Gwen is originally from Utica, studied in Florida, began her practice as a licensed massage therapist in northern Wisconsin in 1999, and has returned to Illinois where she puts her talents and training “on the table” helping people in her home & at Dr. Yepsen’s Chiropractic Office in Granville. GREAT PRGRAM, LORRAINE!
