Geotourism is a program of the National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations and National Geographic Maps.
Forming a Geotourism Alliance
The local geotourism alliance needs one leader or organization to spearhead the effort, maintaining communication with NGS throughout map production. Alliance members should represent all aspects of geotourism – they might work for historic preservation, conservation, and environmental nonprofits, or in private-sector businesses and organizations that legitimately support and practice geotourism.
Alliance members may need to include someone who knows how to solicit advertising or obtain grants. A local editor who can refine site descriptions will keep costs lower. Alliance members are committed to the in-depth process of map production, which may take a year or more to complete. One major task of the alliance is to help nominate sites for the MapGuide.
Thus, the alliance is a bridge between locals and NGS, gathering information on sites nominated and consulting with NGS on selection. NGS accepts responsibility for final selection in accordance with editorial guidelines.
