Action for Love Your Body Day

Post date: Oct 13, 2013 11:29:31 PM

October 16 is Love Your Body Day. It is the day we recognize that media portrayals of women do not match reality. It is the day we celebrate how we are all beautiful, how we are perfect just as we are. Only 5% of women have the body types shown in advertisements. Airbrushing makes models even more perfect, presenting images impossible to attain. Pasco County NOW encourages our members to pay attention to how the media distorts reality and point it out to the other women in your life.

Important results from the 2012 NOW Survey:

  • Worst body image -- The continued exploitation of young girls, like in "Toddlers and Tiaras" and fashion magazines - 43%
  • The most inspiring action -- The girls who convinced Seventeen Magazine to stop using Photoshop to alter women's and girls' body sizes and face shapes - 51%
  • What needs to be fixed -- Magazines and advertisers should stop using Photoshop to create unrealistic images of women - 25%

Recommended action: Make a pact with yourself to treat your body with respect. Give yourself a break from women's magazines and the mass media. Try a new physical activity just for fun, not to lose weight. Stop weighing yourself, and change your goal from weight loss to improving your health.
