During my career in education, I have taught every level from pre-K and Kindergarten to university education courses, from elementary classroom to art and technology. Designing curriculum that spans and bridges disciplines is stimulating and rewarding. The last phase of my career found me teaching and coordinating technology at International School of the Americas. From 1999 to 2014 I supported students' and teachers' use of technology, taught Global Art and coordinated students exchanges to Japan as well as served as webmaster for two schools.
Global Art is a studio art class in which students examine and explore cultures and art history. Students create an electronic portfolio documenting their artwork and recording artist statements about their work and the process of creating. STEM Art, another Art 1 course brings the relationship of art with science, math, and engineering.
My travel with students includes trips Nuevo Laredo, Zacatecas, Mexico, and Takayama, Japan. During the summers of 2000 and 2003 I participated in a Fulbright Memorial Fund Master Teacher Program. That fellowship led to a long term relationship with Takayama Nishi High School in Japan. In October of 2008 I participated in a National Consortium for Teachers about Asia Fall Study Tour to Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul. During July 2009 I again traveled to Japan, this time on a Fulbright Hays Study Tour following the path of Matsuo Basho, a 17th-century Japanese poet. I was honored as the campus selection for the Trinity Prize for Excellence and the Teacher of the Year and later as a Teacher of the Year finalist in the district.
Over the years I have developed teacher resources materials for teachers for the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Institute of Texan Cultures, and several publishers of classroom art resources.
At the end of May 2014, I retired from the classroom. I look forward to continuing my work with schools, museums, and other organizations.
In October 2016 I led a group of yogi friends to Japan on a trip: Seeking Sacred Spaces. We explored a few of my favorites in Takayama, Mount Norikura, Kyoto, and Nara, taking in the highlights of culture, food, and natural settings.
