Libraries and Hallways

Back To Architectural Ideals Page

I have seen houses with rooms dedicated to holding shelves of books. Then all the furniture such as recliners and sofas would be set out away from the shelves. This to me has always seem like a waste of space.

Then the hallway, something invented to provide privacy, so people would not have to go through a room to reach another seem to me too much of a single functional use.

Why not when designing a house, lay out the hallway to be wider to allow built in bookshelves. Depending on whether you are going to have a book shelf on one side or both sides would determine if the hallway would need to be a foot or two feet wider to accommodate the built in bookshelves. Then special lighting could be designed to light the fronts of the bookshelves.
