Karl King Award Recipients (click here for a list of previous winners)
Each year, an active and retired director are selected to represent the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association for their excellence in instrumental music education. The recipients are then sent on to compete for the IBA Karl King awards.
History/Purpose of the Award:
After conferring with a committee to formulate an award dedicated to those band directors who have “... contributed immeasurably to the school band movement,” Jim Gosnell, Elections Chairperson, on November 4, 1981, wrote a letter to the IBA Executive Board and all District Presidents regarding the implementation of the Karl L. King Distinguished Service Award. The Karl King Distinguished Service Awards (Active and Retired) will be awarded to members of Iowa Bandmasters Association who have made significant contributions to the IBA organization and school band programs. Jim Gosnell also noted in his letter:
By making this award, we can accomplish two goals worthy of note. First, by initiating the Karl L. King Memorial Distinguished Service Award, we honor Mr. King, whose contributions to the band movement in Iowa and throughout the nation is invaluable … Secondly, we now have a way of honoring those among us who have given so much time, effort, and excellence to the band programs in our schools.
