Referee Info
Referees are an essential part of the game and a critical resource. If you are interested in becoming a referee you have to become USSF certified by taking an annual class to remain current on the laws of the game.
When considering which referee course is best for you, two important factors need to be considered:
What games do you want to referee?
Which course best fits into your schedule?
Most referees start out as an assistant referee at the recreational level (players who don’t try-out for their teams) and then after they feel comfortable
begin working as a referee. Based on some referee’s background, some begin as assistant referees in competitive leagues (players who try-out for their teams).
Based on these factors US Soccer has developed two different beginning grades (levels)for referees. This is not in any way related to their age or grade they are in school.
Grade 9 referees are licensed for assignments as a referee or assistant referee on any recreational level game.
They are also eligible for assignment as an assistant referee on competitive level games up to an including under 14 year old players.
Grade 9 entry level referee courses are held over one day and last 8 hours.
Grade 8 referees are licensed for assignments as a referee or assistant referee on any recreational or competitive level game.
Grade 8 entry level referee courses are held over two days and last 16 hours total
