She was also an occasional volunteer recruiter who referred friends for jobs that resulted in lifetime careers. Helen was an excellent cook and served a group of veterans from the VA Hospital a homemade meal every Thursday in her home for many years. She was a faithful member of New Heights Baptist Church and helped make pillows for patients in hospitals and collected handmade caps and booties for newborns. She rescued dogs left to roam near her country home and found homes for many strays, caring for them and protecting them. Helen especially enjoyed having her granddaughters visit and teaching them to bake pies for holidays.
