Magic is an ancestral power wielded by the original inhabitants of Valoris, stretching from the simple ignition of a fire to will-working a miracle. However, over the course of history, and under the scrutiny of both Father Ish and the world itself, magic has dwindled greatly in power among humanity and has grown weaker even amongst the Spiritfolk. More often than not, in regards to humans and their kin, it will manifest itself as a simply bizarre sense or unusual ability, and due to a stigma about it, is usually ignored or forgotten. There are, however, some cultures throughout the world who still practice it, secluding themselves from the society as a whole and making potential enemies with the world itself. Magic is divided into three rough categories, at least by scholars, but most simply refer to it all as Black Magic and summarily ignore it.
Clerical - Holy magic wielded by the most devout members of the Church of Man, it is almost exclusively limited to expunging illness and disease. Another, rarer brand is wielded by an occasional smith employed by more prominent churches; imbuing weaponry and armor with the blessings of Prometheus. Such a smith is rare, but their talents are peerless and valuable in acts such as the slaying of spirits of destruction and other things that the citizenry need not learn of.
Ancestral - Intrinsic magic of the mind and body, it can take many bizarre, sometimes even hazardous forms. It is something that is generally considered the weaponry of the Spiritfolk, but it occasionally manifests even in humans. It can take the form of an extra or altered sensory perception, unusual physiological changes, or peculiar auras or sensations. More-often-than-not, it is covered up as swiftly as possible and any number of methods is employed to remove or suppress it; many humans believe it to be the same as the Third Magic. The Spiritfolk often wield it in self-defense, however, and it is noticeably potent among the Dryad and Sylph.
The Third Magic - Often referred to as Black Magic of the Cursed Power, the Third Magic is unnatural power that, when wielded, can potentially harm the world. It is the magic sought out by Practitioners, and, although it can be used for good, is regarded as contemptuous, if not evil. It is a broad category, hence its name, and can be applied to the simplest ignition of a fireplace to the extinguishing of life. Using it is corrosive to both the body and mind, requiring amble amounts of rest and preparedness lest the wielder and up a victim as well. The energy required to cast such spells is in extremely small quantities, and anything beyond small cantrips often requires some sort of idol or fetish. Some cultures even go so far as to implant energy sources into living beings to draw forth power, as seen in the Riah Tribe on the Eastern Continent.
