Math 8 and 9 Unit 1: Integers TEST Coming soon!
This should all be review, but forms the backbone of future math in Grade 8, 9 and beyond! So it's important!
Topics to know and review
Adding and Subtracting Integers:
a) basics on a thermometer number line...add means go up, subtract means go down.
2 + 5 = -4 + 3 = -6 - 2 = +3 - 2 =
b) brackets to identify the integers. if it helps, rewrite the question...
(-4) + 3 = (+2) - 6 = 5 - (+3) =
c) most complex questions require a model. We learned 2...the Put in/Take out and the simplify the signs chart. You'll need to know at least 1, and then may still need to know the thermometer method for some
(-7) - (-2) = (+2) + (-1) = (-5) - (+3) = (+3) + (-6) =
Multiplying and Dividing Integers:
a) use the chart to figure out the sign of the answer (+ + +, + - -, - + -, - - +). If the signs are the same the answer is positive, and if the signs are different negative answer.
-5 x 2 = (-4)(-10) = (+20)/(-5) = (-36)/(-6) =
Order of Operations: BEDMAS:
a) when an expression has 2 or more functions (math operations) we don't always do them from left to right...we need the proper order to do them...the order of operations!
b) Identify the first step by going through B E DM AS, underline what step you need to do, then solve just that step and rewrite the entire question with just that step solved.
c) repeat with your new, simpler question, and repeat until you end up with an answer.
Your TEST will have EASY, MEDIUM and HARD questions. Below are some of the EXTENDING questions that are an EXTENSION of your learning:) Review previous pages for the range of questions on the test...
Ugly practice questions!
The trick is NOT JUST to get the answer...but to show others what you did along the way to get the answer...
Show all your steps in such a way that anyone could follow!
