important -- track(s)
due to the wide variety of students, and in particular of LifeStyle Informatics (LI) students, it is now possible to choose a track, either basic, regular or advanced. Naturally, LI students should choose for the basic track,
and my advice is to start exploring the draw example in key(s). This may also a viable option for IMM students. And, don't forget to look at the blob(s)! Advanced students may want to look at physic(s).

03 November 2014 09:30 via email I wrote: MMA -- grade(s) / feedback
the first round of grading is done, with many thanks to Jeffrey, also for his contributions during the course!
reading the essays, I was happy to see that many had their smaller or bigger personal victories, and most
learned (to apply) valuable (new) skills, and also I was pleased to see the great variety of final applications, well done!
I submitted the results today, so hopefully they will soon appear on vunet
there will be no correspondence via email about actual grades, but you may look at
http://record.eliens.net/ma/monitor/grade.php
to see whether you have passed, and when this is (unexpectedly?) not the case, the reason is indicated in:
http://www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/ma/participant.html
for example, missing essays, missing content, or no content at all.
with the next round of grading, the 15th of november, I will look at these portfolios again,
so you don't have to submit a new request for grading!
if you are not satisfied with your grade and want to negotiate a lower or higher grade,
send me an email with arguments for your (desired) alternative grading result (include your groupnumber)!
finally, your feedback is still welcome, using the form at:
http://www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/ma/feedback.html
and of course, if you spotted any mistakes from my part, please let me know asap!

Quite a low turnout at the last lecture... For now I just assume most of you are just working your fingers to the bone trying to create the best application possible and didn't have any question to ask in the classroom.
Couple of things:
- If you do have questions feel free to keep emailing me for hints and suggestions
- I use Chrome! If you are testing your awesome application and you find that it does not work on chrome (but does on another browser) please state on your portfolio which browser I should be testing your application with. By default (if no such message is available) I will assume you tested the functionality in Chrome also and it is safe for me to grade it this way. DO NOT be as lasy to not check it yourself in chrome and just write your own browser for the ease of it... I wíll be negatively influenced by this during grading if I find out this is the case. To be safe: include a statement saying which browsers you tested with and if the functionalities were working somewhere on your portfolio site :) (but, you know, optionally)
- next week we will have the final presentation. This is highly recommended if you want us to get the best possible feeling (for grading you) for your project. Even if your project is not fully finished you are invited to take the stand and tell us what ís cool about it (or what will be) rather than what is nót. Please @all: email me whether or not you want to present your final app next week (and have a good opperunity to positively influence us).
- I will probably check for the only time in the course who is in class and who is not. This because of the low turnout this week... I want the people that are going to present to have an (respectfull and interested) audience. So I urge you all to show up and no give me the need to play a policemen (eventhough I look fantastic in blue...). Same time and place as always so don't be late
- of course... Maybe there is some reason some of you cant make it: use the absence page on the Google site for this or (rather you dont) send me an email.
- In this course we do grading a little differently: you have to ASK US to be graded! Tell me explicitly whether or not you want to be graded at the first deadline or if you want to postpone your grading. Do this asap or at least before the end of next week
Sorry if some words seem harsh, by far not my intention but needed nontheless from time to time.
Do contact me if you're stuck on something, need help with your project or have other (course-related) issues. I am here to help.
Take care and goodluck on finishing your projects,

Just a couple of things that are on my mind that came about because of some of your questions :
- Most importantly: ALWAYS USE YOUR JAVASCRIPT CONSOLE FOR DEBUGGING (sorry for the capitals, its important)a
If you are on chrome use: https://developer.chrome.com/devtools/docs/console
If you use another broweser google for: javascript console *browsername*
- Remember the resources!
You can use http://www.w3schools.com/js/default.asp to learn Javascript stuff
But they also do very useful JS things on their CSS schools
for example: http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_class_visibility.asp
Check that on the page it says how to do this in JS as well :
JavaScript syntax:
object.style.visibility="hidden"
This makes easy CSS to JS conversion possible.
- Just email me if you want guidance!
If you are lost I will give you a roadmap! I won't bring you to your destination... but I will show the way.
- If you cant make it fake it!
Don't be afraid to use a practical approach in your project: rather make something that works round about what you want then trying to achieve a far more difficult solution which you might never reach:
Want fire in your game? DONT use particles, USE premade sprite images... Dang, dont even animate them if it doesn't work just show them statically! basic idea: Adapt your PRODUCT to your SKILL LEVEL and not the other way around. I can give you tips on how to do this.
Hope this helps ppl. I am available all day today on the email, don't hesitate to ask questions.
Best,
- Jeffrey

when working at the annotation editor students encountered the following problems:
(1) it didn't work in the context of the bootstrap framework (Tom & Yoni)
(2) integration with the media viewer failed (Daan & Linford)
indeed, (1) the js used in e.g bootstrap may clash with the code used in your annotation editor,
and (2) integration may be more difficult than expected, due to a variety of reasons.
So, I would to give the following hints:
-- use separate files for the application, and only integrate it in the framework when it works satisfactorily,
one way to avoid clashed is the use of an iframe, to be able still to use the decorations of the framework
-- it might be worthwhile to reverse your approach, that is instead of extending your media viewer with
annotation facilities, you may start with the annotation editor and then fit in your (possibly simplified) media viewer.
More in general, when you have (technical) questions, (learn to) use:
https://sites.google.com/site/multimediaauthoringvu/question-s-answer-s
other students may have encountered similar problems, and apart from convenience, I
think you can (and should) learn from eachother!
Tomorrow, we will have the presentation of the concepts for your final application(s): 1 minute per group,

there are now 51 registered groups, see http://www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/ma/participant.html
some of which have to update their information, which can only be done by email to eliens@cs.vu.nl
all registered participants have access to the google site: https://sites.google.com/site/multimediaauthoringvu
based on their email as provided in the registration.
there is a scratch page on which you can practice without risk to damage any content:
https://sites.google.com/site/multimediaauthoringvu/scratch
next wednesday, the focus will be technology, that is html5, canvas, js and possibly other libraries.
if the room M623 again proves to be too crowded, we will discuss the option of another (bigger) room in
the main building.
please check the information in the participants list, and if you send corrections or
ask questions, for convenience, please add your group number!

As indicated by the work in progress presentations, many of you are (very) well
on track, but some are still missing some of the basic exercises,
and 11 are either NOL or NOF (not online or found).
Next wednesday are the presentations of the final project, for which
those groups that are ready for grading will get priority.
However, if we have time left, also the other groups are welcome to present.
You will get 4 minutes, with possibly one minute for some feedback from class,
that is after 3 minutes I will give a signal, indicating that you must finalize your
presentation within 2 minutes!
For those that are not ready fro grading, you may submit a request later by email,
and you can check: http://www.cs.vu.nl/~eliens/mma/participant.html
to see whether there is an R with your group.a
After grading (the first round of which
