Ethical Reasoning in Mathematics
While there are behavioral rules enforced by specific disciplines in which mathematicians work (e.g., the actuarial code of conduct), there is currently no established “code of ethics” for mathematicians. Moreover, even where such rules exist, they do not necessarily focus on the quantitative or algorithmic work itself, but rather on the communication practices and conflict of interest. We want our students to recognize the power of mathematics as an essential analytical tool to understand the world and their role to create mathematics responsibility and use mathematics ethically. Moreover, we want to enable our students to use critical inquiry and reasoning to identify a problem, research solutions, analyze results, evaluate choices, and make ethical decisions. In this talk, we will discuss a case study we created for our Probability students that exemplifies the importance of quantitative literacy for ethical reasoning.
We validate campus parking and provide dinner, and participants earn CPE hours (TEA approved) for this workshop.
