Biology Labs
FIRST SEMESTER:
1) Microscope use: (Can be combined with a microscope lab day to get labs done in Study Hall or ??)
http://shs.westport.k12.ct.us/mjvl/biology/microscope/microscope.htm
2) Cell structure http://bio.rutgers.edu/%7Egb101/lab1_cell_structure/section8_frames.html
3) 8 Labs involving Cells Alive online virtual investigations: (real microscope pictures)
http://www.cellsalive.com/toc_cellbio.htm (Topics: How big? Cell models, Mitosis, Meiosis, Myocytes, Apotocytes)
4) SexLinked Traits – A Powerpoint with Queen Victoria hemophilia information – asks for a conclusion after viewing, have the student write up their “conclusion”:

5) Virtual Scanning Microscope: (begin research here, and move on to the next site, summarize what is learned about Scanning Microscopes (ie. History, development, uses, images, future prospects and investigations)

SECOND SEMESTER involves many organisms, and there are tons of online dissections. Require a hand drawn (not printed) detailed, labeled diagram of the organism, inside (after dissection) and outside (before) views:

Earth Science Labs
This site includes Approved Earth Science Labs your students can choose from to complete a preapproved culminating project requirement. This is not a lab credit course, so no formal writeup are required, but can be submitted for their project. They can use the same Lab Template on the Home page. The original approved Earth and Space Science Curriculum did not specify how many labs needed to be completed but includes over 30 “Lab and Field activities” and a 15% Lab Notebook in the assessment methods so you may want to use these to complete the Formal Lab writeups for CP or SD Earth Science course credit.

This site is a hotlist of applets for earth and space sciences, read down the screen for 100’s of downloadable simulations.
Chemistry Labs
Here are the free Online Chemistry labs I had Wyatt do last year, they require some computer saavy:
The Carnegie Mellon sites have 34 Virtual Labs online. I made copies of the Virtual Lab User’s Guide and the first online lab (plus a list of all labs with their difficulty noted). Below are the web addresses:
User Guide (and other documentation): http://www.chemcollective.org/doc.php
Virtual Lab List: http://www.chemcollective.org/assignments.php
Tutorials: http://www.chemcollective.org/tutorials.php
Plus there is a copy of a “Murder Mystery” involving chemistry to solve at this site: http://www.chemcollective.org/mr/index.php
These are labs you can do at home that have easily obtained materials. These would also be usable for lab writeups. I’ve also attached the lab writeup template to the home page, so you have the format. You can find these at http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/sci_edu/farber/
Physics Labs
This site includes Approved Physics Labs your students can choose from to complete the written lab requirements, or they can complete those in their book. They can use the same Lab Template for the writeup format on the home page. Use as you need to complete the 10 Formal Lab writeups (5 per semester) for CP or SD Physics course credit. The 2010-11 TLC High School Catalog requires labs for course credit.
