Welcome

ABOUT THIS CLASS: In this class, you will learn about the history of the United States from Exploration of the Americas to the Reconstruction period after the Civil War. This class is based on the Standards set by the Texas Education Agency. Yet, we do not have a choice on "WHAT" we learn we do have a choice on "HOW" we learn and experience the content covered in class. We will use our opportunity this year to learn how to incorporate critical thinking skills into our everyday life. To be successful in this class what you will most need is.....GRIT!!! Which means you need to develop the following characteristics: Courage, Conscientiousness, Follow through, resilience, and a strive for excellence.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER: Well, finally my favourite subject, ME! Hope everyone is up for a story. I am originally from a Puerto Rican

family from Harlem, New York City. I am the youngest of four but in addition have four step-brothers and sisters. We moved to Lewisville, Texas in 1989. The apartment we lived in was twice the size of our living space in New York. I thought I moved up a social class. I graduated from Lewisville High School, home of the Fighting Farmers in 1996. Where I learned to bleed maroon and white. After high school, I attended Northwood University in Cedar Hill, where I received my degree in International Business and Business Management. I minored in Political Science and Spanish and graduated in 2000.

I spent the first part of my professional career as an Industrial Recruiter with Snelling and Snelling. After the Nine Eleven events, I refused to commit to my calling for public education. I continued in recruiting until 2004 where then God called me to teach 8th grade U.S. History at H.F. Stevens middle school in Crowley, Texas. I spent the next five years with a wonderful staff and social studies team. During that time I was recognised as Teacher of the Year, spent 4 years as the department chair, district improvement committees and helped develop programs that are still being used to assist students in their studies. During that time my wife, Jill and I had our first child Benjamin Ray Santiago.

That is when my teaching really changed. Seeing that I could be training my son's future teacher or a politician that he will have to vote for. In 2010, I made the move to Bailey Junior High still teaching 8th grade U.S. History. During this time Jill gave birth to Lila Grace. My family and I enjoy being invited to the students' events such as volleyball, football, other school sports and events and we really love being invited to students out of school events like Judo tournaments and FFA shows. During my time here at Bailey, I have sponsored a History Club, NJHS, and Bass Fishing Club. I am an all hands in Teacher and full of school spirit. My mission at Bailey is to encourage my students to believe in their potential, inspire them to want to learn, and equip them with the tools to help them be successful. I LOVE Bailey.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO REMIND AND LINKS FOR EACH CLASS

Why Is It Valuable to Prepare for Class before Attending? Class preparation is a main part of your learning experience. Learning requires that you connect with the information and materials for class and then actively participate in class when you arrive there. A great deal of your learning should

happen as you work on your own, which is why you can expect to spend as much time outside of class learning as you spend in class/lecture.

  1. Preparing for class before attending helps you understand the lecture material better.

  2. Go through your notes and your books to generate questions about facts and concepts in the course material.

  3. View quizzes as an incentive to prepare and a tool to see if you understand the material. If you don’t do well on the quiz, this means you need to talk to the teacher about the material you don’t understand, prepare better, or prepare using a different study method.

  4. Devote at least an hour to the assigned reading for each class session. You need time to interact actively with the reading as the main ideas develop so the ideas can sink in. When you break your reading up into too many small pieces, you defeat the construction of the textbook you’re reading.

  5. Be prepared for class discussions so that you can offer knowledgeable participation. When you participate, you learn better! In many classes, participation will be a portion of your grade. Most teachers view participation as a way for the class to discuss the material as a group, and they welcome student interaction through questions and comments during class. Author: Shirley “Mandy” Sexton, Ph.D.

TARDY POLICY

Don't be late! Being late to class without a pass says to me: " I don't care about my learning". An unexcused tardy is subject to disciplinary action. It is extremely important that students realize the decision of an excused or unexcused tardy rest solely on the teacher and administration.

ORANGE PERIOD 7

BLUE PERIOD 4

The purpose of PreAP (PreAdvanced Placement) classes in the secondary schools is to provide a school program to meet individual needs and to provide a diverse instructional program. Beginning in the seventh grade, students are offered the opportunity for participation in a PreAdvanced Placement program in English, math, science and social studies. When considering enrollment into PreAP and AP (Advanced Placement) classes, factors such as the student's past performance, accumulated test records, student interest, and parent approval may be considered. The student and parent will receive a PreAP and AP Expectations of Enrollment letter, explaining the rigor and standards of PreAP and AP classes prior to enrollment in the class. Students being considered for PreAP classes should exhibit motivation and a desire to pursue in-depth learning, initiative, creativity and curiosity. The PreAP program will challenge and stimulate students to the highest level of their ability. Students will be provided myriad opportunities to engage in in-depth work which will focus on the ability to analyze and synthesize. Quality of work rather than quantity of work will be emphasized. The PreAP program culminates with Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate (IB) and Dual Credit college courses offered in the Arlington high schools. If ongoing evaluation determines that the PreAP course is not meeting the student’s needs, a reassignment may be considered after consultation among the student, parent, teacher and administrator/counselor. A Permission to Withdraw from PreAP and AP Class(es) form must be signed by the teacher, student and parent, and returned to the teacher or counselor prior to withdrawal from the PreAP course.
