"We never know how high we are till we are called to rise; and then, if we are true to plan, our statures touch the skies."

— Emily Dickinson, American poet

We are learning about:

Topics: Exploration, and Geography

Vocabulary: Political, Economic, Religious, Social, Exploration, Intellectual, Era, Competition

Rationale: Between the 16th and 18th centuries, many Europeans embarked upon a "New World." Then again, the "new world" wasn't exactly "new" to those who inhabited America for centuries prior to the arrival of Europeans. When worlds collide, it creates challenges for all.

Major concepts addressed this week:

· The movement of people, goods, and ideas causes societies to change over time.

· The arrival of Europeans in the America in the 15th century changed the lives of people in both the Americas and Europe forever.

· The European competition for colonies in the Americas led to settlement and exploration in many parts of North America.

Skills: Trace- List in steps; Analyze- Break apart; Describe- Tell all about; Support-back up with details; Compare- All the ways they are alike; Contrast- all the ways they are different

From Mr. Santiago,

This week I have incorporated a new learning strategy that will help students with recall and application of that information to writing. Each week your student is to complete a 10 sentence reflection and get a parent initial to show the learning has happened. Statistics show that students learning increase if the parent and the student are communicating about their learning. The fact is that learning increases by 92%.

I have the students communicating through an evening writing prompt Monday through Friday. The assignment will be due every Monday through the rest of the year. If you have any questions or even suggestions on how to help your student increase their learning just shoot me an email.
