A leader ensures that every student has access to quality teaching and optimum learning experiences.
2023-24
2023-24 Reflection: Relationships may be at the foundation of how I pride myself as an administrator, however this domain, asmentioned in previous years, is one that is at the reoute of my work at Crestomere School and pushes me to improve and maintain our high AER results. Last year I have achieved my goals for this domain and have moved them into regular practice in what I do at Crestomere School. My goal this year is to build a colaborative Crestomere School Continuum of Support that is a living and breathing process in how we support students, staff and our community in all areas of learning and wellness. This is a process will be ever evolving, however the goal is to have a process rolled out to staff in the spring after the consultation and draft process and feedback.
2022-23
2022-23 Reflections: This domain is one I work on every day at Crestomere School. As I mentioned in my 2021-22 reflection, I strive to make sure Crestomere School is highly functional. To do this I want to fully understand what is happening in relation to teaching and learning and how my students and teachers are feeling. I have set three simple goals in relation to this domain for the year:
To walk-through every classroom every day for a minimum of 10 minutes. So far I am on track to complete this goal
To do one targeted supervision with post supervision feedback of a teacher a week. I did not meet this goal during the first half of the year, however I am back on track for the second half. I have also planned to work with my staff on a process where they will get into each others class and observe specific ELE components. This process will be rolled out on our February PD day.
To remove barriers for my teachers as the work to implement new curriculum, redevelop assessment understand and Powerteacher Pro processes and as they work to complete the flourishing goal of our ACE plan.
My Admin PLT has focused on building capacity and connections for my staff. I have partnered with other schools to enabled collaborative opportunities between our staffs.
Top Left: CTF Foods. Bottom Left: Working on Pronunciation and word blending. Middle: Science experiments (effects of disapating oxygen levels). Right: Geography
Left: Science Experiments (combustion). Middle: CTF - Hydroponics. Right: understanding friction and wind.
2021-22
Students above and below are actively learning about Shakespeare and Colonization
Above: K/1 students are learning about colour through a ti-dying activity. Below: A grade 2/3 science lesson on Crystals.
2021-22 Reflections: This is another key domain for a highly functional school, which is something I am striving to make sure Crestomere school is. I do my best to be out of the office regularly and walking through classes. I get to see my teachers in action and we regularly discuss student learning. Through my walkthroughs I actively try to leave feedback on what I observed. My Admin PLT group is focusing on the book below, "Now We're Talking" by Justin Baeder. As part of our PLT we share and reflect on practices and ideas from the book and how to increase our capabilities as active leaders who know what is going on with student learning.
Area for Growth: I will continue to strive to make connections outside of the school that will enable a variety of different learning experiences for the students and staff.
Going on a Monster Walk in grade 1 and learning about different leaf types.
How do I met this standard?
Student success, isn't that what it is all about? As an instructional leader I diligently work to provide opportunities for everyone in the school community to learn and grow as individuals. I expect students to be given the best opportunities to do so and as a result it is fundamental that I work with staff to build their capacity to respond to learner needs.
Being an active member in our school's High School Redesign process and through the Collaborative Response Model implementation I diligently work to meet our student's needs.
I actively try to get into our teacher's classrooms to see teaching and learning
I will reflect and leaves notes for teachers as needed
I have preformed 6 new teacher evaluations.
I research and share innovative practices and new ideas that I have tried with my classes such as outcome based learning and assessment practices
Through the framework of the 12 ELEs I have created mastery rubrics and I work with staff to create mastery rubrics for their classes.
I analyze and work with staff on student IPPs to make sure programming is practical, supportive and appropriate for all students who need them
I have built my own personal learning network through the effective use of social media which has enabled me to learn from people all over the world. This has also enabled me to share my ideas and I try to empower staff to build their own personal learning network.
During PD days I have run tech session focusing on tools that can help teaching and learning and the implementation of them into the classroom.
I actively "watch" over a grade of students each year.
students are referred to me for academic support.
Through my masters program I have learned and developed great skills and understanding of instructional strategies. Through classroom walk-throughs I will often offer ideas for teachers to use and implement.
As a Diamond Team member I have been active in helping develop our school's assessment procedures
I was the leader and member of the development team for our Foundations program in grade 10. The focus of the program was to have teachers work collaboratively on the lessons and structures that would help reach the goals of the program such as: executive functioning and skills and strategies to be a successful high school student.
Other avenues of school operations under my lead which require me to work with staff and provide student support include:
STAR Literacy screening and strategy implementation

Specific 2021 Comments from staff included:
Engaged, positive, optimistic, easy to work with, tackles life and the job with a sense of humour that can ease difficult situations, trustworthy, likeable, ethical
Jay references his master's courses as he has conversations with staff in regards to his research and his experiences.
I think you "walk the talk" example - the work you did in creating the Science 14/24 course ...makes you an authentic leader if you yourself are role modeling example - how to implement new methods of course delivery
One example of Jay's leadership is his development of blended learning environments. As a member of the LCHS science team Jay has provided leadership and been a mentor for the other science teachers.
You have continued to develop this capacity since your first year here and I have definitely witnessed your confidence in the area the last couple years, and especially this year as we moved to a quarter system and you did a lot of legwork to provide direction for the staff on the positives and negatives of this shift.
Jay has the charisma of a good leader. He has a presence that that lets students and staff know he means business but at the same time approaches staff and students in a playful manner that exemplifies respect. He strikes a very good balance between the two sending a message that ones experience at school, whether a student or a teacher, can be fun while at the same time a place that requires a certain level of expectations be met.
Jay is continually seeking to understand. Asking for help or guidance as needed and supporting others when they ask for the same.
Past Surveys and Feedback (2013-2016)
Staff Survey 2013 to 2015:
Comments from my staff included:
"I appreciate that you are a good listener. I feel that when I talk to you you listen carefully to what I am saying. I find it helpful as well that you have a science background and can relate to the issues of teaching science."
"Jay's suggestions for the use and implementation of technology and programs has been very useful and positive."
"I think that you have done an effective job of leading by example with your Science courses, as well as the emails that you send to staff alerting them to technological and pedagogical resources."
"Jay has been an active in all PD day activities. His work with his online science course has provided an exemplar of ways to differentiate instruction within our school."
"You are very good at supporting the classroom teacher. All the work you have done tracking attendance is sending a message to kids loud and clear that they are expected to attend and you will hold them accountable if they get off track. I see a difference in our school from your work. Please continue with this approach."
"When Jay works through a problem, with a student and/or staff, he is very good as 'closing the loop' with the student and/or staff member to provide maximum success for students and provides staff with the supports they need to be successful in their classrooms"
