A leader provides opportunities for members of the school community to develop leadership capacity and to support others in fulfilling their educational roles.
2023-24
2023-24 Reflections: This current school year is a continuation on many of the process we have started over the past couple years. Crestomere is a community and I do my best to help faciltiy and support all within the community to feel safe, valued and fullfilled. I am a big believe in collaboration and utlizing the strengths of the community. Our new Continuum of Supports with showcase this.
Beyond Crestomere I am also supporting other Adminsitrations in our division through mentorship and meetings to help guide them in their roles. Topics of dicussion include:
Supporting staff
"team" dynamics
student intervetion
"balancing" work and life
bouncing off of daily decisions made
Within Crestomere School I also have two Aspiring Leaders. When applicable I consult and discuss school opperations with them. They are also largly involved in building our Continuum of Supports.
2022-23
2022-23 Reflection: I have tried to step up my focus on this domain this year. I feel I have a better understanding of my staff's strengths and weaknesses going into my second year at Crestomere. With this understanding, requirements and demands of new curriculum implementation and Wolf Creek assessment practices I work to provide opportunities for members of my school community to take on additional leadership capacity and roles. These include:
Hiring my School Council chair with the Breakfast Club of Canada grant FTE dollars to run my breakfast program. This has also help increase my ability to connect with other parents to volunteer within the program.
Provide training to staff of the Library software and process so it remains functional as we transition it to a 'Learning Commons'.
Provide additional training opportunities for staff to be Level B Trained.
I always block out time within our Professional Development days for our Health Champion and First Nations, Metis and Inuit rep to present to staff.
I sent staff members to be "experts" in PowerTeacher Pro. With the implementation of New Curriculum and Assessment Practices, we as a staff have engaged in meaningful conversations of how to report, how our gradebooks are interpreted and how we give feedback to students and parents.
I consult with Wolf Creek Division Office staff to provide training for Crestomere staff in ST Math and Hapara.
I have continued to work and guide our student lead Cougar Council in the planning of activities for our school community.
School council continues to add members as they guide school processes.
I thoroughly go through and work with staff to help meet their PGP goals and provide additional opportunities to meet their goals.
I provide opportunities for some of my staff members to be "acting admin" during days I am away.
Staff will be engaged in a "walk-through" process where they will observe each others class and provide feedback on the ELE's in the spring of 2023. I am using the 10 Mindframes of Visible Learning to help guide staff as I introduce this process.
2021-22
Area for Growth:
I want to create a school "walk through" model where teachers visit each's other classroom to learn and grow form one another.
Assessment capacity of staff - exploring more ways to give valuable feedback.
2021-22 Reflection: This has been another important domain for me during my first year at Crestomere School. I have had many questions about the school and its operations. I believe that if I am able to support and enhance the school community then student learning should see positive gains. I want my students and teachers to have a growth mindset and I want them to feel fulfilled in their educational roles.
Celebrations:
I thoroughly go through and work with staff to help meet their PGP goals.
I have developed an active parent council which advises on school plans and goals.
I encourage staff to take on leadership roles within our staff members as they teacher and support others in such topics as reconciliation, health and wellness and LGTBQ2+ topics. I am working to ensure we have multiple "experts" in the school.
I have provided opportunities and avenues for staff to attend information and training sessions such as Level B assessments.
I have worked to create an active Cougar Council (student union) to facilitate and provide fun activities and messages for the student body.
I have worked with staff to create Tier 2 supports for student learning.
Currently in development of a CTF Chicken course with our school custodian
How do I met this standard?
Teacher's and the school community should follow you because they want to, not because they have to. My goal is to lead a school with a team where we all work collaboratively together to meet the needs of all stake holders.
I create and share informative emails about things I take from professional development opportunities or articles that I read
I have a created a shared Google doc folder that all staff have access to to share ideas from PD
I use the hash-tag #lchspd for all of my tweets that pertain to professional development of the staff
I work with staff leaders in our school to help foster deeper learning opportunities for staff which include topics such as:
Collaborative Response Model Interventions
Quarter Time-table planning
implementation of the ELE model with team leaders, specifically the science department. Within the science department we work on making sure we are all utilizing the same teaching and assessment methods of the ELE model to provide more consistency for the students
During conversations with staff members I work with them to find answers to their problem rather than providing the answer such as classroom management issues
I have actively consulted with other high schools on how to implement the CRM in a high school
I actively try to do daily walk-throughs of classes and through my supervision of teachers I worked hard to mentor those that have great qualities to help our school move forward and support students even more.
I attend school council meetings and present school data and practices.

Past Surveys and Feedback (2013-2016)
Survey Results: 2013-2015
"good team leader as well as teammate ... encourages ideas and growth in others"
"I have seen Jay encourage others, including myself, to take on leadership roles. He is not "jealous" of his authority or of the leadership role, which makes it easier for others to step up."
"I believe Jay is doing a very good job in his role, both as a teacher and as an administrator at LCHS. I have every confidence that what he does is in the best interests of the school and those that are part of it (staff, students and parents). He is amicable but most of all he is firm and fair when dealing with issues and people"
