A leader engages in career-long professional learning and ongoing critical reflection to identify opportunities for improving leadership, teaching, and learning.
2023-24
2023-24 Reflection: The current goals and direction of Wolf Creek Public Schools and our Admin Association have been great at helping develop my capacity as a Educational Leader and has provided some great resources to help develop the capacity of my staff in the areas of:
Excellent Learning Environments: I have worked with staff to do a "deep dive" into our practices within the ELE's. I have helped set my staff up to continually share and observe each other so they may learn and have collegial conversations about best practices and pedagogy.
Differentiated Instruction and Universal Design Learning: During allocated time on professional development days I have staff engage in lessons, research, sharing and reflection of these instructional methods to help better serve our students.
At Crestomere School we are also undergoing changes to our Collaborative Response Model. I am taking the work that I have done with staff in the past couple year's on Ross Greene and in consultations with Kurtis Hewson I am redeveloping how we gather data on students and disucss their needs. I have also enlisted two staff members to work with myself on developing a living and breathing "Continuum of Supports" for Crestomere School that will meet the needs to all students and staff.
Here at Crestomere we are also continuing to develop and support our students and staff through:
Social Emotional Learning Program
New Curriculum
2022-23
2022-23 Reflection: This current school year I continued to develop my and the Crestomere staff capacity within the Collaborative Response Model. The work we did as a staff followed a continuation of learning using Ross Greene's "Lost and Found" book. Through the school year we have revamped how we discuss and communicate with students during "plan B" time and did a deep dive into understanding what student supports are needed and the implementation process needed once these meetings have happened. This has lead us down a path where we have revamp the Crestomere School's Pyramid of Interventions and changed a lot of the language and discuss methods during a CRM meeting.
Another analysis that I undertook this year was of our Literacy Data in our Elementary Grades. I utilized Literacy Data from our F&P testing and government testing. The analysis of data led enabled me to create a block 2 literacy period and targeting literacy inventions on Wednesdays. During the block 2 literacy period all students from grades 1 to 6 are placed in similar ability reading groups with targeted and independent reading interventions. On Wednesdays, during library time, I pull students to work one on one on literacy skills.
Last year I reflected that I wanted to further develop my understanding and capacity within the Social Emotional Learning Domain. Through division connections with the SEL coordinator and our school SSW we have brought in lessons for students and staff. I believe these lessons have had a direct positive impact on student to student relationships and student mental health.
The implementation of new curriculum has also required me to critically reflect and supervise my teaching staff and identify opportunities to support them with learning and resources in the classroom. New Curriculum has also enabled me to work closely with staff on assessment, assessment practices and the ways we communicate assessment through PowerTeacher and in person to parents. This will be a continual growth area as more subjects are implemented.
This year I have also taken opportunities to be part of the Zone 4 School Leadership Community of Practice and the Virtual School Leaders Speaker Series. I am also just finishing Dr. Joe Sanfelippo's book, "Lead From Where You Are".
2021-22
My Professional Growth Plan, which does not focus specifically on this domain, is always about learning and building capacity within myself and my staff
Other areas that I have worked with my staff on are:
assessment (PowerSchool set-up and reporting, Schoology)
IPP and LSP development and goal setting
STAR Literacy - what do the reports tell us?
Areas of Growth:
Elementary Literacy testing
Level B assessment
Further exploration of ATA workshops to fit our school need.
Social Emotional needs of students and staff
2021/22 Reflection on this domain:
One of my goals to help build capacity and moved myself and the Crestomere staff forward on our understanding of working with diverse learners and Tier 2 supports and modifications was to undertake a book study on Ross Greene's "Lost and Found" book. Each PD day I lead staff through a chapter reflection. As we work through the chapters we have be developing and working on "Crestomere School's Tier 2 support and action document."

How do I met this standard?
A Growth Mindset. I strive to push myself forward so I can be a positive contributor to society, to my school, to staff and the student body or any individual that I may have to pleasure to meet. As an educator I firmly believe that I have a responsibility to continue to learn so I may effectively teach, problem solve and collaborate with staff and students. I think that is is imperative that if we expect our students to learn and take risks then we should model the same to them.
I was an active member of the administrative team at LCHS.
We regularly connect, share ideas and collaborate on how teaching and learning looks at LCHS
We all have our areas of strength and we lean on each other when we need support.
Areas of strength and focus for myself include: assessment strategies, student-directed learning, Collaborative Response Model to Intervention, technologies uses in the classroom
I seek feedback:
I regularly ask my admin team for feedback
I consistently poll staff through feedback surveys
I work collaboratively with my teaching departments on learning tasks
In 2016 I completed a Masters of Science in Education on "The Art and Science of Teaching"
Through my own classes, with staff or when supervising and evaluating new teachers I regularly refer to what I learned and the positive impacts it can have in the classroom
I try to staff active on new educational data, trends and ideas through social media channels and through books and education magazines.
I am an active member on professional development days as I work with staff in our areas of focus such as:
Developing an understanding and planning practices of the Quarter Time-table
The Collaborative Response Models and intervention strategies
STAR Literacy results and meaning of data
2021 comments from staff survey:
Jay is continually seeking to understand. Asking for help or guidance as needed and supporting others when they ask for the same.
Jay is an active leader in PD days and in staff meetings. Providing examples, explanations and providing support when dealing with new ideas.
Jay works hard himself to meet the demands of our schools and divisions vision and mission statements. He implements numerous strategies in his classroom and is always willing share his triumphs and shortfalls with regards to classroom initiatives.
You are a part of the admin team and are always promoting what the school is about and how to make it the best place we can. You are a true team player.
