This trust, managed by St. Michael’s parishioner Lois Kuhle,
is a ‘fishes and five loaves’ project that supports 3 pre-schools in deep rural Zululand,
just south of the Swaziland border near Pongola.
Established in July 2003, the Trust focuses on uplifting neighbouring communities in the Magudu area.
It was conceived as a means of creating a peaceful and meaningful relationship between the communities surrounding the Milimani Game Sanctuary, a game farm with a 4 star lodge, then owned by Lois and her late husband, Ken. It contributed to their philosophy of responsible tourism.
In 2005 Ken Kuhle died of a heart attack and Milimani Game Sanctuary was part of a successful land claim, thus forcing Lois off the farm.
She has however continued to support these communities with food, stationery and teacher training.
These communities are extremely impoverished with no piped water or electricity.
Dwellings are 100% organic – consisting mainly of mud huts.
Women spend most of their day gathering fire wood or tending to chores around the home.
Young children now have the opportunity of day care, basic child education and a guaranteed daily meal. Water is collected in drums from a communal hand pump.
St. Michael’s Umhlanga Rocks has taken this project under their wing for a winter drive
to collect clothing and bedding for young babies and children up to 5 years old.
It is not unusual to see babies put to bed on cold concrete floors.
Please support this campaign.
