The beginning of another term and the last of the year.
It is the 1st October.
Spring was announced a month ago,
yet the rains have still to relinquish their precious drops.
On a positive note, a water pipe is being laid from the Mkuze River to service the entire Sovane community. Each household will have access to running water, albeit a single tap in the yard. Mrs Buthelezi's rather sad and shrivelled up vege garden can look forward to constant water in the future.
Our first food drop was at KwaDlaKuze and it's with great disappointment that we hear, yet again, that the parents WILL NOT pay the tiny sum of R30 per month for each child to attend pre-school. It is absolutely sin-ful as parents get a child grant of R290 per month. School fees are less than 10% of this, including a guaranteed meal each day. Majozi has agreed to look after the kids until the end of the year, but no promises for 2014. We gave him a R200 'gift' (thank you John and Lynda Oldham, this was from your donation) in gratitude for hanging in there.
These communities struggle on every level. There is no running water, no electricity and no access to provisions. The earth is unyielding and the soil poor. Kids recycle anything to create a game (wish our urban kids would learn a lesson or two from this!).
This is an example of what? Skop die blik (Kick the can!?)
Flattened cans are gathered between their feet and whooop, up they go, hurling as many as possible into the plastic bucket!
KwaDlaKuse is at the end of an ox-bow, literally at the end of the earth.
As wonderfully organic as it sounds, it is a mud-hut village, with mud-hut facilities.
Note the water pump on the left. This single hand pump serves a community of over 600 people.
The food we deliver each term feeds in excess of 50 children, 5 days a week.
Milimani Educational Trust has been operational for 10 years now.
Thanks to all the Trustees, and especially to our donors!!
