Unsealed Sections
There are four sections of unsealed road on the route. The quality of these varies very good to very bad.
There are a few patches were it looks like the new gravel hasn't been fully compacted. Mainly areas of low traffic on the remote parts of the Grand Ridge Road. These sections are also a bit rough due to logging traffic.
About 12km in to the ride you will meet the first section of unsealed road as you complete the climb into the Strzelecki Hills and join McDonalds Track. This continues for approximately 6km leading riders along the north facing ridge of the ranges and offering extensive views over the Latrobe Valley towards Mt Baw Baw.
The second is a 5km section between Seaview and Trida. The quality is fair, with several patches of loose gravel. Click here for photo.
The third is a 45km section between Boolarra and Balook. Riders can expect to encountered the full range during this part of the course. It start reasonably well until the Foster turn off at Gunyah Junction then degrades to a rather rough and patchy. There are several sections of loose gravel, notably at 104km point where it is particularly bad.

The next section is 4km between Traralgon South and Churchill. This sandy and reasonable well graded, but there are some deep ruts and riders should take care.
The final section between Childers and Yarragon South is 7.5km. The surface is well graded with the odd gravel patch on inside of some corners. However, this section is predominately up hill, so unless you are going flat out it should cause no problems.
