For a few of the veterans in the league, they can recall a time when goalies used to jump not from team to team, but rather league to league. Gerry Cheevers, Bernie Parent, Jacque Plante and Mike Luit - all floated back and forth between the WHA and NHL. And so it goes with Derek Willet.
When the Flames left the VMA for the Newburyport League, at some point they picked up Willet as their netminder. Like a lot of mens leagues, Newburyport doesn't keep any hard stats - but those in certain circles say Willets lifetime record hovered around (105-25-9). Believe what you want, but the VMA welcomes that type of pedigree. The Bulldogs saw the writing on the wall. As the media pressure loomed, the organization pulled the trigger and lured Willet to join them. Facts speak for themselves as Willet has the Bulldogs in 1st place and is (6-1-0) after his first 7 starts in the VMA.
