Wintergreen plants

Growing habits of Wintergreen

Gaultheria procumbens

This is a good representative photograph of wintergreen growing in an ideal environment. The leaves are a glossy vibrant green and the berries are just starting to turn red.

A typical Maine woodland setting including the moss covered rock. Can you see the bright green wintergreen plants around the base of the rock and in the moss? These may all be part of the same plant as the roots of the plant grow horizontally just below the surface of the soil. Tiny plants erupt from the root and fight their way to sunlight.

Wintergreen makes an outstanding ground cover!

The right plant for the right place is always an outstanding combination. Nature does it best, as you can see from this natural growth of Wintergreen, very happy in this Maine setting.

This is what Wintergreen looks like in December before the snow falls. The leaves have changed color and are a dark burgundy. Bright red berries are easy to spot in the winter.
