The Drove 2
The official walk entrance to this old drover's track, aptly named The Drove and which passes through Beech Clump en route to Whitesheet Hill, is off the B3092 road at Drove Lodge (see map). The first option uses the road to get there (as we have seen). Here we document the other (recommended) route. This uses an official path through Stourhead estate, along by Stourhead House. Parking can be had at the Garden Centre next to Stourhead House, or (as here) at the Stourton Lane access point. Not shown on the Ordinance Survey map, but signed by the estate, the way to Drove Lodge is close by Stourhead House. All is made clear below. . .
To recap, Drover's Lane (The Drove) is an 18th-century drove track lined with beech trees. Once called generally a green lane this leafy tunnel approach to Beach Clump is now
marked as a public bridle way (long dashes distinguish this from a simple footpath with short dashes) by Ordinance Survey.
