The first fitting involved the skirt & petticoat 'samples' worn over the short jersey dress. The skirt voile was marked for an initial length & the waistband marked for its sizing. The satin underlay was also marked for a slightly shorter length.
After the fitting, the skirts were assembled & stitched to their waistband & then left to hang for 10 days to allow the hemlines to drop. They were then levelled to their pre-marked lengths ready for a final fitting.
At the final fitting, each skirt & petticoat was sent to the bridesmaid where it was fitted by the respective mother. The hemline was safety pinned up at the front whilst worn over ballet pumps - the waistline was also safety pin marked to size.
The length of this dress was left until most of the other finishes had been completed since the bridesmaid was still actively growing in height!
(For further details see SPECIAL FINISHINGS section)
For the 3 younger bridesmaids, the skirts were open all down the back & the satin section of the skirt had a wide underlap added to the edge of the opening.
All waistbands had both a large press-stud as well as a hook & bar for fastenings. This ensured the waistband remained tightly closed during wear especially when the sash was in place over it & was completed to ensure that in movement, the skirt did not 'gape' open along the press-stud edge.
The voile overlay was only added to this point (see image above).
The eldest bridesmaid's skirt had a zip opening to hipline (see above).
The voile was rolled & narrow zigzag edged by machine - this fluted the bias hemline.
The satin underskirt was first overlocked then turned under (see image upper) & stitched on the edge using a narrow zigzag stitch (see image lower).
