What Librarians Can Do to Help Save Guidebooks & Make Them Available
- Continue to add field trip guide books to your library collections. Pursue them relentlessly!
- Make print copies of guidebooks that are online or on CD-ROM, and add them to your collection.
- Be very careful about weeding a guidebook from your collection, even it is not being used. It may be the last copy in existence. If one goes missing, do your utmost to replace it.
- Educate non-geology librarians of the importance of guidebooks so that the guidebooks don’t get weeded. Perhaps, put a note on the catalog record or in the item cautioning against weeding.
- Adopt a Guidebook Series and help us fill in the gaps in the database and GeoRef, and then continue to add updates. Contact Lura Joseph <luraj at uiuc dot edu> for information regarding how you can help.
- Send information to the GSIS Guidebooks Committee or AGI (GeoRef) about guidebooks that you add to your collection. You can use the online Waiting List <http://www.library.uiuc.edu/gex/gis/GuidebkForm>, or send the information to us by e-mail (luraj at uiuc dot edu) or snail mail. What we need to know…
- Series
- Title
- Volume
- Publication Year
- Your name, e-mail address, and university (GeoRef may use this information to contact you since they will need to borrow the guidebook for indexing)
