Quaternary Research

Quaternary Research is the study of the interval of Earth's geologic history that spans approximately the last two million years, and includes the Pleistocene and the Holocene. Quaternary Research is especially interdisciplinary.

Quaternary researchers study lake sediments, ocean sediments, ocean circulation, ice cores, cycles of the earth/sun, atmosphere, fossil and modern animals and plants including invertebrates, vertebrates, insects, and pollen, and other subjects. Current topics of importance include global climate change (past, present and future), atmospheric, ocean, and terrestrial interactions, and the building of testable computer models.

America: American Quaternary Association (AMQUA)

New Web Site: http://www.amqua.org

The American Quaternary Association (AMQUA) was founded in 1970 to foster communication and cooperation among researchers in widely diverse disciplines, but having a common interest in the Quaternary Period. AMQUA holds biennial meetings, each focused on a broad thematic topic of wide interest to members, along with associated field trips. AMQUA publishes the newsletter The Quaternary Times twice a year, and the journal Quaternary Research is an "unofficial publication outlet for AMQUA" (Dyer, 2004). Symposium: SM-06

TITLE: Dynamics and retreat of the eastern Laurentide Ice Sheet

CONVENORS: Michel Parent (GSC-Quebec), Michel Lamothe (UQAM)

CONTACT: Michel.Parent@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca

DESCRIPTION: Evidence of widespread interactions between ice sheets and global climate systems has renewed interest in the flow dynamics, retreat patterns and chronological record of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. In addition to ice streams and ice shelves systems which generated huge iceberg discharge events in the North Atlantic, recent reports show that ice streams produced abrupt, large scale reorientations of flow patterns as well as large readvances in the inland areas of the ice sheet. Reassessments of the chronological and paleogeographical record of the eastern LIS suggest that episodic outburst floods from large glacial lakes dammed along the southern margin of the ice sheet may have momentarily slowed down or even interrupted North Atlantic thermohaline circulation and produced severe cooling events in the Northern Hemisphere. This symposium offers an opportunity to re-evaluate current thoughts about the mode and timing of the most critical sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the Late Quaternary.

Researchers study ice cores, ocean sediments, ocean circulation, lake sediments, fossil and modern animals and plants including invertebrates, invertebrates, insects, and pollen, cycles of the earth/sun, atmosphere.... Of importance are atmospheric, ocean, and terrestrial interactions, and the building of testable computer models.
