Originally created in 1957. In 1972 the former Department was abolished with a new Department of Revenue, combining the then DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE (now called KANSAS. DIVISION OF TAXATION - see K-Doc RE 6), PROPERTY VALUATION DEPARTMENT (see RE 5), MOTOR VEHICLE DEPARTMENT and OFFICE OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONTROL (see RE 4) with related officers and boards into the above Department. Created in 1957 assuming part of the duties and powers of the KANSAS COMMISSION OF REVENUE AND TAXATION (see K-Doc # RE 1). In 1975 the Board was made an independent agency within the executive branch. Although it is still classed "RE" the Board is not now a part of the DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE. [KSA 74-2433 et seq]

Created as a division within the DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE in 1972. Included in this class is the division's predecessor: KANSAS. PROPERTY VALUATION DEPARTMENT Created by 1957 session of Legislature. Abolished in 1972 and duties assumed by above Division. Also included here is the KANSAS. KANSAS. DIVISION OF TAXATION

Created in 1972. It's old name was KANSAS. DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE, but when the new KANSAS. DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE (see K-Doc # RE 1) was created in 1972 the old Department's name was changed to KANSAS DIVISION OF TAXATION and it became a division of the new Department. Thus the pre-1972 KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE is the predecessor of the KANSAS DIVISION OF TAXATION and all material published by KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE from 1957-1972 should be classed here. Material published by the KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE after 1972 should be classed under RE 1.1.

Also included in this class: KANSAS. STATE COMMISSION OF REVENUE AND TAXATION. Created in 1939 and abolished in 1957. It was succeeded by the 1957-1972 KANSAS. DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE classed under K-Doc # RE 6.

Also included in this class: KANSAS. TAX COMMISSION. Created in 1907, it succeeded the BOARD OF RAILROAD ASSESSORS and the STATE BOARD OF EQUALIZATION. It was abolished in 1925 and its duties were assumed by the PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION (see K-Doc class area CB 300). However, in 1929 the TAX COMMISSION was recreated (referred to in cataloging as KANSAS. TAX COMMISSION (1929-1939)) and served until 1939 when it was once again abolished and replaced by the above STATE COMMISSION OF REVENUE AND TAXATION. Also included in this class: KANSAS. CEREAL MALT BEVERAGE TAX DIVISION.

Note... Although the PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION has a different class area than the TAX COMMISSION the State Library has classed the biennial and annual reports of the PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION's TAXATION DEPARTMENT (issued during the 1920's) under K-Doc # RE 6.1: We have done this to keep the reports of the different "taxation agencies" together from 1907-1957. <inactive class> Established in 1889. In 1933 duties were assumed by KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF INSPECTIONS AND REGISTRATION (see K-Doc # RE 8).

"The first law governing the inspection of coal oil in the State of Kansas was enacted by the Legislature during its Session of 1889, which provided for the appointment of a State Oil Inspector, by the Governor. In 1913 the law was revised, and in 1933 the office of State Oil Inspector was made a part of the Department of Inspections and Registrations. Abolished in 1939 and duties transferred to the State Department of Inspections and Registration, which in 1939 became the Department of Revenue and Taxation, and in 1953 the Department of Revenue."
