ADMINISTRATIVE AGENCIES

KANSAS. DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION

[KSA 75-3702a et seq] Department created in 1953. Current name in use since 1972. From 1953-1972 known as KANSAS. STATE DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION.

Included in this class: KANSAS. DIVISION OF ADMINISTRATION... Created as a division of the Governor's Office in 1951. In 1953 it was recreated as the above independent agency.

Note... This class has the unfortunate roll of catch-all for a series of administrative agencies created in the history of Kansas government before the current Department of Administration's beginnings in 1953. These agencies were not precursors of the present Department of Administration but were probably classed here because one had the word "Administration" in its name. The agencies included in this class are listed here chronologically: KANSAS. BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF STATE CHARITABLE INSTITUTIONS... Created 1873. Abolished 1905 with duties and powers assumed by: KANSAS. BOARD OF CONTROL OF STATE CHARITABLE INSTITUTIONS... Created 1905. Abolished 1917 with powers and duties assumed by: KANSAS. STATE BOARD OF ADMINISTRATION... Created 1913 for the management and control of state educational institutions. Its powers were increased in 1917 to include control over charitable and penal institutions. In 1925 the Board's powers and duties over the state's five major educational institutions were transferred to KANSAS BOARD OF REGENTS (see K-Doc class area E 21). In 1939 the Board's powers and duties over charitable and correctional institutions were transferred to the newly corrected KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE (see K-Doc class area SR 1) and the BOARD OF REGENTS. In 1953 the Board of Administration was abolished and its powers and duties over penal institutions were transferred to the newly created KANSAS. BOARD OF PENAL INSTITUTIONS (see K-Docs class area J 5).

The State Printer was at one time a Constitutional officer of Kansas. From 1868-1904 the officer was elected by the Legislature in joint session. From 1905- the State Printer was elected by the people until 1977 when the office of State Printer was abolished and the above Division was created under the Department of Administration.
