The Board was created by Executive Reorganization Order (ERO) No.34 in 2011 and succeeded to the powers, duties, and functions of the KANSAS PAROLE BOARD, which was abolished by the same ERO. The Kansas Parole Board (also classed here) was created in 1986. From 1974-1986 the Board's name was KANSAS. ADULT AUTHORITY. From 1970-1974 name was KANSAS. STATE BOARD OF PROBATION AND PAROLE.

On May 24, 1990, the Kansas State Penitentiary and the Kansas Correctional Institution at Lansing were consolidated to form the LANSING CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. Material for the Lansing Correctional Facility is classed here. For material issued by the Institution at Lansing before 1990 see K-Doc class J 22. Material issued before 1990 by the KANSAS STATE PENITENTIARY, established 1864 at Leavenworth (Article 7, section 2 of Kansas State Constitution), is classed under this number.

On May 24, 1990, the Kansas State Penitentiary and the Kansas Correctional Institution at Lansing were consolidated to form the LANSING CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. For material issued after this date see K-Doc # J 20. The above name was in use from 1983 until consolidation in 1990. From 1971-1983 name was KANSAS CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION FOR WOMEN. From its founding in 1917 to 1971 name was KANSAS STATE INDUSTRIAL FARM FOR WOMEN.
