KANSAS. STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

(Important note: From mid 1991 until 1997 the name, State Department of Education, was eliminated from all official publications and replaced by KANSAS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION. Publications during this time period are found under the Board's class area (E 7). The exception are serials begun before 1991, issued by the Department, which continued to be classed here.)

The Department was authorized by an amendment to the State Constitution passed in 1966 and which became operational January, 1969, combining the duties and functions of KANSAS STATE BOARD FOR VOCATIONAL EDUCATION (see K-Docs class area E 5.30) and the KANSAS STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION. Also included in this class: KANSAS. STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. GUIDANCE & PUPIL PERSONNEL SECTION.

Note... The State Library includes within this class two of the Department's predecessors: KANSAS. STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION and KANSAS. The Board's predecessor, also called KANSAS. STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION, is included in this class. This Board was created in 1873 and reorganized in 1945. In 1969 it was abolished and reestablished with same name. It serves as the governing body of the Kansas State Department of Education. During the early 1990's the Commissioner of Education and the Board eliminated the name, State Deparment. Of Education and the name, Board of Education, was used solely for the board and the agency. In 1997 the name, State Department Of Education reemerged.
