This is something I learned not to do when I was young, since whenever I had a goal, life seemed to have another plan for me. But that I'm old and wise and stubborn and lead a much less interesting life, I'm surprising myself each year. In 2008 and 2009 there were readings of my heretofore secret musical. In 2010, I published a book of my previously abandoned cartoons. In 2011, my heart hereby declares this to-do list of dreams!
Finish The Reason She Left & Other Stories, the compilation of my full-page comics, or "graphic novelties" as I'm calling them. It's coming along beautifully. But instead of being almost done, I've just realized I've just begun. This happened while writing Perfectly Revolting as well. Much writing and designing still to do. A soft release this spring or summer, a nice party at St. John's in the fall, and a reading at Litquake in October are my desires!Make Some Book Trailers. Of Perfectly Revolting. Of TRSL. Of both. Of Wings. Write some press releases. (Good ones really work!)
Submit Perfectly Revolting to the IndieBookAwards in March.
Start Building the Patchwork Princess Project. At last... a Grand Plan for the musical!!! Phase one will be a collaboration and competition between East Bay high school drama departments; up to ten schools can perform songs from The Souls of Her Feet. Phase two will be a similar event with college drama departments doing Mirror Imag(in)e. Phase three: local theaters doing The Number The Beast. This is a five-year plan. (I don't think I've ever had a five-year plan.) First steps: build an advisory board and find a fiscal sponsor. Then apply for grants, meet people at the Ohlone theater competition, and build a team.
Workshop the novella, Everyday Enchantments (working title), for all participants to get 'the big picture,' and start the publishing process.
Other pet projects that deserve more time than I can probably give, considering the clamoring for attention the above projects are making....
Idle-Free Oakland. I know the new mayor... this city has lots of problems to solve... but can we educate people to turn off their engines? We're still a long way from 350.
A parents' reading group. My son's going to start high school where there's a Paideia program. I want to read those books, too! I would love to teach a class or lead some seminars on liberal arts topics.
And of course, the not-a-pet-nor-a-project work of raising a kid with his own big plans and challenges... the most important goal of all.
