I know a few people who are really good with words. Maybe you're one of them. Maybe you're a professional writer, habitual writer, good teacher, or great communicator. Maybe you just like to write. I would like all people who are good with words to know something, and to join me in talking about it to whoever you talk to. Just like I’m talking to you about it now! The thing I want you to know about is a number. That number is 350, and it is significant because 350 parts per million is the safe upper limit that scientists have determined as the amount of carbon that can be present in our planet's atmosphere to maintain stability. Throughout human history, 272 ppm has been the norm. Today this number hovers around 390. Surprise, surprise, our glaciers are melting. Even though global warming makes me want to run around waving my arms and screaming, I know that being shrill turns people off. But this is too important to shut up about. I've got a kid, and he's awesome, and I don't want his future to be about sheer survival, but it very well could be. So I'm keeping my voice low and asking you politely to help me speak up.
You've probably heard about 350, and you're probably doing something about it already. If you haven't and you're not, please get informed at 350.org or co2now.org or just google "350" and then start talking about it. The fact of 350 needs to be mainstreamed yesterday. 350 needs to be on everyone's minds, and controlling our climate has got to be everyone's highest priority.
On October 10, 2010, a day 350.org has declared a "global work party," I'll be writing about 350 ppm to my own audience of about 200 people. So far six writers have committed to join my writing party, writing to their audiences. Won't you join me as well?
You don’t have to RSVP, but if you'd like to join the Write 350 club, you can do so on Facebook, Redroom, or 350.org and tell us what you said.
Now, here's that cartoon:
