Albatross Revolution Clone

This is actually a Chinese copy of the standard Revolution design, and was a trade with a fellow flyer. I was intrigued by its design and flight when I say him flying it and so I was pleased to own it. Despite the bad reputation these "eBay Knock Offs" get the general build quality was very good indeed, along with a spare spar and quite decent flying handles.

Purchased: Sometime in 2012

Good Things

    • Much cheaper than the real thing.
    • Good build quality.
    • Good package.
    • Pleasing and different sail design.

Bad Things

    • Despite a general good build quality there were some rough edges around the wing tip bungy chords.
    • Very hard to remove spars from the end caps.
    • Given the nature of these eBay kites the exact make and model will have changed over time.

Final Thoughts

This is difficult - as a kite its actually good (although knowing enough about kites to adjust things such as lines and bungee tension really helps) and certainly it looks the part in the sky. Bearing in mind that mine was second hand a lot depends on the cost you can get these kites for - too cheap and you get what you pay for, too expensive you are getting towards the "premium price" an actual Revolution kite costs so there is a middle ground where its good value and performs well. The problem is this isn't an established kite brand, which means the "Albatross kites" I can find on eBay today in 2021 might not be anything like this Albatross kite.

If you are tempted by a cheap eBay Chinese kite it possibly best to do your homework and read reviews, ask questions and so on. The old rule "if it looks to good to be true, it IS too good to be true" is made for this situation.

I haven't commented on the ethics of a Chinese copy of the Revolution design - I understand the original patent on the Revolution design has now expired so I suspect these copies are legally fine now. But I would understand perfectly if people avoid Chinese "Revolution" copies in order to support either Revolution themselves or smaller kite builders.
