I missed the first delta fly in since I was away on holiday, so it was nice when Dave from Five Forty Kite Sports organized the second one at the end of August.
I arrived at Lodge Moor around 3:30pm to find that the day was rather dull, but thankfully rather windy, although wasn't attended by that many from Sheffield Kite Fliers. A few from the Northern Kite Group had made the trip over the Penine hills to join in. I made valiant attempts to look like I knew what I was doing with my Flexifoil Fury, Mark flew his black and purple kite, Neil (from NKG) his Level One, Stuart (again from NKG) his home made (and very nice looking) Virus, along with one or two others. I flew the Fury for a while, then got out the Revolution 1.5 SLE, for a change, whilst Neil did an excellent job teaching others flying techniques.
After a couple of hours we decided to go over to the Spider park nearby (which is better in a westerly wind) and continued to fly there for an hour or so. It was a much cleaner wind there than over at the Sportsman field, which of course made the flying easier.
In the middle of the park there is a small clump of young trees with about 4 picnic tables in between - eventually I wondered if I could fly the Revolution in and around the trees and land each table in turn. This turned out to be great fun messing around with accurate flying - along with taping the trees with the leading edge of the Revolutions, bouncing the lines off the tree trunk and the like. If could have ended in tears with the kite getting stuck or damaged, but thankfully this time I got away with it. When I mentioned my "good idea" to Neil he informed me that they already did this sort of thing at festivals. Oh well, nothing new under the sun....
I think we all had a good afternoon flying, but it would have been nice to have a few extra local fliers joining in. Anyway, roll on the next one.
