For a good place you need....
- Enough space - depending on the length of your lines, how much the kite will pull you, etc. A large, powerful kite usually pull you forward quite a few meters when it takes off (depends on wind speed) - make sure you have a few meters!
- No obstructions - or at least be aware of them.
- Know where footpaths are - does a public right of way cross where you are flying? If so either (preferably) avoid it or keep a very careful eye on it.
- Know what is behind you - usually you find you move backwards as well (especially in a light wind). It is not much fun colliding with something or (as I have done) found a nice hole to step in.
- Be careful of roads, railway lines etc. - If the wind is blowing towards a road (or other transport route) think carefully about flying there.
- Other people - if other people are flying kites (or anything) give them space & be nice to them. If in doubt speak to them & check it is OK.
- Avoid trees & buildings - you will get turbulence if the wind has to pass over obstructions. Moving further away will improve things no end.
- Are there any restrictions? - especially involving traction activities (buggying, mountain boarding or kite surfing). Please obey any restrictions in force - ignoring them will make the situation worse!
- Be careful flying by yourself - especially when doing traction activities where the danger to the flyer is greater. Always let people know where you are and, if possible, carry a mobile phone.
And of course the golden rule is: have fun and use your common sense.
