A New Species of the Insect-slaughtered Pimpla, whose larva resides in Spider-Nest.

En ny Art af Insect-slägtet Pimpla, hvars larv uppehåller sig i Spindelbon. 

    At each step, which the Scientist advances in the rich field of nature, its examination encounters objects, as worthy of attention, as admiration. The insects, although considered by many to be insignificant animals, nevertheless exhibit in their household and way of life a number of peculiarities which the larger animals lack. Especially under larval conditions, the larger ones become a prey to the smaller ones, which later obtain their destiny to keep the number of the former within a certain limit. The entomologist is therefore often deceived in his hope, as instead of a beautiful butterfly, he receives an Ichneumon, some Tachinae, or small Pteromalines. Many consider the minor Insects, to be of no use; but this judgment derives only from ignorance. In addition to the existence of these small animals, some insects harmful to our plants would soon be increased to such an extent that they would consume the farmer's harvest. The larva of the Cabbage Butterfly, Papilio Brassicae, is alone attacked by a large number of Ichneumones, which prevent its excessive reproduction.

  豊かな自然の中で科学者が進める歩みにおいて、注目や賞賛に値するような対象に遭遇することがある。昆虫は、その多くが重要でないとみなされがちだが、大きな動物が持っていない数々の特殊な生活様式を見せる。特に幼虫期において、大型のものは小型のものの寄主となり、後者は後に前者の個体数を一定の範囲に収めるように維持するという宿命を持つようになる。昆虫学者は、この力学の下、美しいアゲハチョウのかわりにヒメバチやヤドリバエ、小さなコガネコバチを得ることに失望する。多くの人はマイナーな昆虫に価値はないと考える；しかし、この考えは無知のみから来るものである。これらの小さな動物の存在の他に、我々の植物に有害ないくつかの害虫は、作物を加害するレベルまで増えるだろう。青虫は、たくさんのヒメバチによって寄生され、爆発的に増殖することを妨げられている。

    Vid hvarge steg, som Forskaren framtränger på naturens rika fält, möter dess granskning föremål, lika värda uppmärksamhet, som beundran. Insecterne, ehuru de af flere anses såsom obetydliga djur, framvisa likväl i deras hushållning och lefnadssätt en mängd besynnerligheter, som de större djuren sakna. Isynnerhet under larv tillstånd blifva de större ett rof för de mindre, hvilka senare erhållit sin bestämmelse att hålla antalet af de förra inom en viss gräns. Entomologen blifver derföre ofta bedragen i sitt hopp, då han i stället för en vacker fjäril, erhåller en Ichneumon, några Tachinae, eller små Pteromaliner. Många anse de smärre Insecterne, vara utan all nytta; men detta omdöme härröter blott af okunnighet. Utom dessa små djurs tillvarelse, skulle snart en del för våra vexter skadliga Insecter ökas till sådan myckenhet, att de skulle förtära landtmannens skörd. Larven till Kål-fjäriln, Papilio Brassicae är ensam angripen af ett stort antal Ichneumoner, som förhindra dess alltför stora förökande.

    The spiders, though the most ardent pursuers of the other insects, and who with their insidiously stretched nets wreak great havoc among the numerous crowd, become themselves, under their undeveloped condition, haunted by a pimple, whose description and drawing, as well as the story of its transformation, I humbly request to be handed over to the Royal Academy of Sciences for review.

クモは、他の昆虫の最も熱烈な追跡者であり、知らぬ間に張られた彼らの網で多くの昆虫を惑わすが、卵や幼体など未発達の状態ではヒラタヒメバチに寄生される。このハチの記載、図版、変態の過程について、王立科学アカデミーにおいてレビューされることを望む。

    Spindlarne, ehuru de öfriga Insecternas ifrigaste förföljare, och som med deras försåtligt utspända nät göra stor förödelse ibland den talrika skaran, blifva sjelfve, under deras outvecklade tillstånd, hemsökte af en Pimpla, hvars beskrifning och teckning, så väl som berättelsen om dess förvandling, jag ödmjukast anhåller att få öfverlemna till Kongliga Vetenskaps Akademiens granskning.

    In the month of April, 1818, when, in the heat of a few hot days, I began to search for insects under the bark of stumps, I noticed a spider's nest, filled with several whitish larvae. All the spider's eggs were devoured, so that only their shells remained. This immediately caught my attention; the nest was taken home and placed in a glass; after a day, I found the larvae already turned into pupae. Of these were hatched later on 28 June of the same year:

1818年4月、数日やけに暑い日があり、切り株の樹皮の下で虫を探し始めたとき、白っぽい幼虫が何匹もいるクモの巣を見つけた。クモの卵はすべて食べ尽くされ、殻だけが残っていた。これはすぐに私の目に留まり、巣を持ち帰ってガラスの中に入れ、一日後、幼虫がすでに蛹になっているのを見つけた。その後、これらが羽化したのは同年6月28日である。

    Uti April månad 1818, då jag, i anseende till några varma dagar, började söka Insecter under barken af stubbar, bler jag varse ett spindelbo, uppfyldt med flera hvitaktiga larver. Alla Spindeläggen voro förtärde, så att endast skalen deraf voro qvar. Detta fästage straxt min uppmärksamhet; boet hemtogs och lades i ett glas; efter en dags förlopp fann jag Larverna redan förvandlade till Puppor. Af dessa utkläcktes sedermera dan 28 Juni sammaår:

    Pimpla ovivora black yards down, front-alarm scutellique white stripe; the stain of the chest, lateral lines and points of the abdomen red; front feet yellowish, postieorum hips and hip red, white legs tarsisque nigroannulata.

    Habitat Smolandia rarer; Spiders are out of the nest once specimen 7 was shut out.

    Pimpla ovivora: nigra, antennis subtus, stria ante-alari scutellique albidis; pectoris macula punctisque abdominis lateralibus rufis; pedibus anterioribus flavidis, posticorum coxis femoribusque rufis, tibiis tarsisque albis nigroannulatis.

    Habitat in Smolandia rarius; e nido Araneae semel specimina 7 exclusa.
