In this lesson, I taught a small group of 10 students about the proportional relationship topic of rates. I took each student out into the hallway to complete a timed 20 yard dash. Once they got their time, they were able to determine their yards per second and yards per hour time. Students were able to do research to discover various NFL player's 40 yard dash times and determine their yards per second and yards per mile times. They were also able to determine how much gas would be needed to drive to the Mall of America from the elementary school, as well as how much money it would cost with current gas prices. Students were able to research what kind of car they wanted to take, and how much it would cost to take more than one vehicle. This lesson emphasized real-world examples of mathematics.
