I have dedicated my life to teaching the whole child, inside and outside of the classroom. One of the best ways to do this outside of the classroom is through coaching youth sports. Coaching is just teaching, but in a bigger classroom. There are still "learning targets," "learning objectives," and "standards" to follow.
The biggest influence on my coaching philosophy has been reading the book, Why Johnny Hates Sports by Fred Engh. I was first introduced to this book in my college class, Coaching Young Athletes. This book delves into the reasons why organized sports are failing the children of America, and some suggested solutions to these issues.
I started coaching young athletes through the City of Blaine Parks and Recreation's youth sporting programs in the summer of 2012 and I haven't looked back since. I spent 3 summers coaching kids aged 3-12 t-ball, softball, and soccer. I then spent 2 summer seasons as their Youth Sports Coordinator, working alongside a wonderful Recreation Supervisor, to run all of these programs. I have also coached 9th grade girls softball for Centennial High School. At Aurora Charter School, I continued my coaching career as a volunteer coach for Girls on the Run for the spring and fall seasons of 2018. During the Spring of 2019, I decided to try something new and coach middle school track and field at St. Anthony Middle School.
Please explore this section of my website to get a feel for who I am as a coach. You will find my coaching philosophy, example practice plans, and more. I'm looking to extend my coaching career, as my time at the City of Blaine and Centennial High School has come to a close with my teaching position in Minneapolis. I can't wait to hear from you!
