Gladiator Retirement

Had to go digging this up today, so posting it here for ease of finding it. https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en# ... ZlrjCoii0J

The Short: The short of it: Gladiators fought 1-2 times per year, and retired after 3-5 years, so average 6 fights. I came up with rewards for the gladiators of about 3x gp of the xp value of what they're fighting, might be quite a bit less if they're betting on themselves to get that, and that includes patronage. Buying oneself out of slavery was about 3k gp. Fighting for oneself in the arena would be highly profitable - about 4x more gp than that, 12x the xp in gp total, although probably still a 20% manager/fight fee. I would only give some of that for xp as it's 'easy' money. Also fights would only be available once or twice a year, so a lot of that would get eaten up in upkeep if that's all you did.

After a little more research, the cost of a slave is about 34x the monthly cost to pay someone to do the same job. in AD&D you can easily just plug in the monthly costs for various hirelings to see what the value of a slave of that type is. This also jives with the above on retiring, basically buying oneself for that price.
