I just had a thought, you could make the die rolls much simpler and receive a more even distribution, although that might not be what you want.

#1 roll d10+8, #2 roll d12+6, #3 roll d14+4 (o.k. that doesn't really work at a table unless you've got a d7/d14 zochi die or you can roll d20 and reroll anything over 14, or d8 with a d2 for 0/+8, or you can use a die rolling program that can handle those type of dice)

Of course you still subtract #1 from 27 to get ability score #4 etc. You'll have equal chances of 9/18, 10/17, 11/16, 12/15, 13/14 for the first, with 6 and 7 possibilities equally for the other scores. This will give 1/5 chance of an 18 from the first pair, 1/6 from the 2nd pair, and 1/7 from the third, if I got my math right that's about 50.9% chance of an 18. With the 4d6 drop lowest it's 29.24% and 3d6 it's 59.7%

Oh well it looks like 4d6 is probably still the best for somewhat more average scores.
