We forgave our son’s murderers — and it has set us both free

The parents of a teenage boy who was kicked to death have met all three of his murderers — and forgiven them.

Ray and Vi Donovan have spoken of their emotionally charged encounters, which they say “set us free”.

Their son Chris, 18, was killed by two teenagers and a 21-year-old man in May 2001. His attackers were jailed but his parents met each one after their release to say they have been forgiven.

Mr Donovan, of Sutton, said: “Before the first meeting we were nervous. We waited in this room and the door handle turned. I went over to the door and held out my arms and we hugged.

“He said he was a 15-year-old coward and that he’d killed our son. He said the first thing he did on coming out of prison was not to go for a pint but to put flowers on Chris’s grave.

“The second one walked into the room and I held out my arms and he just ran to hug me. He grabbed me and squeezed me and cried on my shoulder. It went on for about 15 minutes.
