The Juneau Bach Society will perform two of Bach's cantatas this coming weekend at Northern Light United Church.
Cantata 19, "Es erhub sich ein Streit" is based in part on the passage in the Book of Revelations where St Michael and legions of angels take on the Devil and his minions. The work begins with a full battle scene, ala Bach at his best, in the music of the high Baroque. This is stunning music which, as the cantata progresses, becomes more and more intimate, and culminates in a chorale of exquisite beauty.
Cantata 140, "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme", is one of Bach's best known works. The cantata was written for the last sunday in the Lutheran church year, and speaks of the need for preparation, in anticipation of the coming of Christ in the upcoming Advent season, as well as at the end of the liturgical cycle.
Both of these works are exceptional, featuring parts for solo voices, obbligato violin and oboe, full orchestra with trumpets and timpani, and full chorus.
Featured performers include Kathleen Wayne, Mark Calvert, Philippe Damerval, Lisa Ibias, Jetta Whittaker, Emily Weaver, and Rick Trostel.
The Juneau Bach Society is conducted by Bruce Simonson.
Hello, Ye Mighty Singers of Juneau!
Resurrection Lutheran Church has asked me to pass on a notice of their upcoming Silent Auction, on Sunday, May 20, from noon to 1 PM.
As you all know, RLC is a very important supporter of the arts in Juneau. They open their facility to rehearsals and performances, on a regularly-scheduled basis, and on short notice. It simply is due to their generosity, mission, and community spirit that choruses in Juneau can pursue their many activities, and prepare for their events. I simply can't thank RLC enough.
RLC also has a very important community mission to support the homeless and hungry in Juneau. To this end, they are planning to renovate the entrance to the church and expand their storage facilities for the community food bank and other missions.
They have asked for our support in their upcoming silent auction, and are also welcoming contributions and auction donations. All proceeds will go to the renovation progam.
Please do what you can, and pass the word.
And thank RLC, its members, and leadership. We are grateful for their work in our community.

Juneau Bach Society performs Cantata 147, Jesu, joy of man's desiring.
The Juneau Bach Society will perform Bach cantata 147, "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben", December 18, at 8 PM, and December 19, at 3 PM, at Northern Light United Church.
Cantata 147 is probably Bach's most often performed choral work, featuring the well-known chorale "Jesu, joy of man's desiring".
In addition to this chorale (performed twice in the cantata), there are movements requiring the talents of virtuosic vocal and instrumental soloists.
Some of Juneau's finest musicians will perform, including soloists Alaska's Kit, Patricia Hull, Jacque Farnsworth, Derrick Grimes, Jay Query, and Philippe Damerval. Instrumental soloists include TJ Hovest, Steve Tada, Lorna Mazoff, and Rosie Humphery. The cantata, for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, will be conducted by Bruce Simonson.
Tickets are available at the usual outlets, and at the door. Adults $15; students and seniors, $5.
