Following the spring lockdown due to the Covid-19 epidemic, all of the 2021 Johnian Golf Society events were squeezed into October. Fortunately we were blessed with very good weather for all of these meetings.
Christ's College match
The match between St John's and Christ's for the Lady Margaret Beaufort Cup was played at Denham. A very convivial 4BBB match again resulted in a 3-3 tie.

Sunningdale
17th October 2021 was a historic occasion as the Johnian Golf Society returned to Sunningdale for the first time since 1959. The 12 golfers fortunate to play in this match were treated to marvellous hospitality and enjoyed The Old Course in excellent condition. The host club fielded a very strong team enabling a comfortable victory.
Marshall Hall Cup
Our mid-summer meeting in Cambridge had unfortunately been cancelled for the second year running. On 24th October, 16 players descended on Princes Golf Club to play a 4BBB Stapleford for the Princes Challenge. The competition was very tight but in the end was decided by Lorraine Wong scoring a gross birdie for 5 points on the 18th hole, allowing her and hare partner Nigel Snaith to pip newcomers Richard and Ade Palmer by one point, For this feat, Lorraine was also awarded the tile.
We dined in the Lucas Room, named after "Laddie" Lucas who famously landed his crippled Spitfire on the fairway at Princes. Laddie was captain of the Cambridge golf team and his son was also a Blue. Richard Palmer had played golf with Laddie's son and treated us to some interesting memories after receiving his prize.

Richard and Ade Palmer
The following day, 17 golfers competed for the Marshall Hall Cup. The winner, with 39 points was Guy MacDonnell. Guy's performance was particularly notable as he had not had the benefit of a practice round, instead arriving late the evening before after attending a wedding. Runner-up on count-back was David Lynas with 36 points. Richard Moxon was won the Posnett Salver with 108 points. Ade Palmer won the Ladies' Challenge.

St John's 173 points
Christ's 156 points
Fitzwilliam 152 points
After our previous victory in the Cambridge competion, the St John's team were also victorious in the Oxford / Cambridge play off. Unfortunately the Oxford competition was not held this year so Christ Church will hold the play-off trophy for another year.
