Match against The AulariansÂ
Huntercombe, 25th March
As usual, our first fixture of the year was the match against The Aularians (St Edmund Hall, Oxford) at Huntercombe. Unfortunately a road closure on the M40 meant that some of the players coming from the north had a somewhat trumatic journey to the club but fortunately this did not detract from a very enjoyable days' golf. The greens at Huntercombe were unusually receptive following recent aeration and this may have contributed to remarkably good scoring. The Aularians score of 243 (best 7 scores) would have secured a win in 2024 but this year The Johnians managed an exceptional score of 258 Stableford points. Of particular note was Keith Scott's level par round securing 44 points.
Gog-Magog GC, 15th April
The Inter-College competition was played in mostly dry conditions and the threatened rain did not materialise until the evening. All the team performed very well, scoring at least 30 points with Paul Baker coming in with an excellent 41 points. In the end though we were pipped by Selwyn who won by just 2 points. Having finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd over the past 4 years, St John's must be due a win again next year!
Last year's winners, Gonville and Caius hosted the dinner.

Cambridge meeting 24-25 July
Eight golfers took the opportunity to dine with the Fellows on Thursday 24th July, the eve of the annual golf meeting. The golf competitions again took place at John O'Gaunt Golf Club on a beautiful summer's day.
Simon Adelman was victorious for the third time in The Marshall Hall Cup with a very creditable score of 39 points. Playing with the Society for the first time, Matt Bryan came second with 34 points and George Clarke won the Posnett Salver with a score of 112. Charles Constable was the nearest to the pin on the 16th hole and Guy McDonnell hit the longest drive on the 17th.
It came as no real surprise when the combination of Simon Adelman and Matt Bryan were also victorious in the afternoon Greensomes with a score of 21 points, closely followed by 2 pairs on 19 points.
Sunningdale match 18th October
12 Johnians assembled at Sunningdale for the match against the Club. Unfortunately the Sunningdale Chairman, Paul Chase-Gardiner was not able to join us this year as he was enjoying a golf holiday in Japan. The Sunningdale team was ably captained by Jon Collins, who had been instrumental in setting up this fixture. We were very pleased to welcome the first lady golfers to play in this match, Rachel Collins and Rachel Naylor.
Against a strong Sunningdale team, the Johnians achieved their best result to date, but still went down to a narrow 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 defeat. After the match, Sunnindale served their version of the Pink Jug cocktail from the Royal Worlington pink jug which serves as the trophy for this match. This was followed by an excellent dinner and a few more drinks for those who did not have to drive home.
