One of the highlights of the 2017 meeting was a after dinner speech on the Thursday by Professor David Purdie on the role of Col. James Ogilvie Fairlie, who was a Johnian, in founding the Open Golf Championship. David has commissioned a painting, "The Opening Drive" (www.openingdrive.co.uk) which depicts the scene based on research to ensure that both shadows and tides were depicted correctly.
10 members played a friendly 9 hole stapleford at Royal Worlington on the Thursday afternoon. 35 members contested the Marshall Hall Trophy on Friday 28th July with the Stephen Munday the winner with 36 points, closely followed by Bill Blyth on 35 points. Peter Scott-Graham retained the Posnett Salver with Richard Moxon as runner-up. Nearest the pin on the 17th was Peter Baird and longest drive on the 18th Tom Henderson. The afternoon foursomes was won by Nick Gower and Nigel Snaith with 19 points with David Livermore and Donald Mark runners-up on 18 points (on count back with 3 other pairs).
